What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Trainee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Trainee, you need a solid understanding of basic engineering or IT principles, analytical thinking, and a relevant degree or diploma in a technical field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, such as CAD software, programming languages, or laboratory equipment, is often expected, along with a willingness to earn further certifications if required. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication skills help you adapt quickly and collaborate with team members. These skills and qualities are crucial for successfully transitioning from training to independent technical work and contributing to organizational goals.

What opportunities for hands-on learning can a Technical Trainee expect during their program?

As a Technical Trainee, you can look forward to engaging in a mix of classroom instruction and real-world, on-the-job training. You'll typically rotate through different departments or projects, gaining exposure to various technologies and tools used by the company. This structure allows you to apply theoretical knowledge to practical tasks under the guidance of experienced mentors. The collaborative environment also enables you to build relationships with engineers, technicians, and other professionals, enhancing your technical and soft skills. These hands-on experiences are designed to prepare you for more specialized roles within the organization upon completion of the program.

What are Technical Trainees?

Technical Trainees are individuals, often recent graduates or early-career professionals, who are enrolled in structured training programs designed to build their technical skills and knowledge in a specific industry or company. These programs typically combine classroom instruction, hands-on training, and mentorship to prepare trainees for specialized technical roles. Technical Trainees may work in fields such as engineering, IT, manufacturing, or telecommunications, and are expected to learn both theoretical concepts and practical applications. Upon successful completion of the program, trainees often transition into permanent technical positions within the organization.

What is the difference between Technical Trainee vs Technical Associate?

Technical Trainer

Senra Systems

Cypress, CA

$30 - $45/hr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Job description

At Senra Systems, we believe that the future of manufacturing lies not in automation, but in configuration.

We supercharge electrical wire harness manufacturing through software configuration, transforming skilled assembly tasks into high-throughput production lines. We enable customers to design what they want, when they want it and deliver harness builds at record-breaking speed.

At Senra Systems, our ability to scale depends on one thing above all: developing exceptional technicians. As a Technical Trainer, you'll play a pivotal, hands-on role in shaping the next generation of wire harness technicians for the aerospace and defense industry.

This role is ideal for someone who loves teaching through doing — an effective communicator who can make complex processes clear, hold high standards, and inspire confidence on the production floor. You'll balance encouragement with accountability, ensuring every new apprentice leaves training confident, capable, and ready to build customer hardware.

What you'll own:

Training Deliverables

  • Lead classroom training sessions focused on core manufacturing fundamentals for our apprentice technicians and specialized operations for our harness+ technicians.
  • Support trainees during the on-the-job (OTJ) phase, reinforcing learning through hands-on coaching, showing skills through demonstration, and providing real-time feedback.
  • Deliver training that is structured, clear, engaging, and aligned with Senra's quality and operations standards.
  • Serve as the visible, on-floor coach for new apprentices — modeling best practices, professionalism, and reinforcing expectations.

Coaching & Feedback

  • Provide direct, constructive feedback to trainees on performance, quality, and adherence to process.
  • Balance being supportive and encouraging with being assertive and clear when requirements aren't met.
  • Identify individuals who may need additional support and partner with the Training Supervisor to adjust learning plans accordingly.
  • Foster an environment where trainees feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and improve.

Continuous Improvement

  • Collect feedback from trainees and production teams to refine training content, pacing, and clarity.
  • Recommend updates to curriculum, SOPs, and materials based on observed trends and challenges.
  • Collaborate with the Training Supervisor, Engineering, and Quality to ensure all training reflects the latest standards, drawings, and customer requirements.
  • Track and report trainee progress, certification readiness, and skill proficiency.

What you'll bring to the team:

  • Basic Qualifications
    • 8+ years of hands-on experience in wire harness assembly.
    • 3+ years of direct experience as a Technical Trainer in a production environment.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills — able to teach, motivate, and hold others accountable.
    • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and work instructions.
    • Comfortable working across departments — Engineering, Quality, and Production — to reinforce standards and feedback loops.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience in aerospace and defense manufacturing environments.
    • IPC/WHMA-A-620 training certification or equivalent.
    • Proficiency in ERP/MES systems and digital training documentation.
    • Proven ability to identify process gaps and propose practical improvements.

What Success Looks Like

  • Every new apprentice exits training certified, confident, and productive on Day 1 of release to the floor. Strengths and weaknesses clearly identified and handed off to Production leadership prior to release.
  • Training sessions are structured, interactive, and grounded in real shop-floor examples.
  • Clear, timely feedback drives both trainee performance and curriculum evolution.
  • The technical training team is seen as a core enabler of throughput, quality, and technician growth across Senra.
