What is a technical program manager internship?

A Technical Program Manager (TPM) Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in managing technical projects and programs. Interns work alongside experienced TPMs to coordinate teams, set project timelines, identify risks, and ensure project deliverables meet technical and business requirements. This role often requires a combination of technical knowledge, organizational skills, and strong communication abilities. Interns may also participate in meetings, track progress, and help resolve issues as they arise. The internship provides valuable exposure to project management processes within a technology-driven environment.

What types of projects does a technical program manager intern typically work on, and how do these projects contribute to the company's goals?

Technical Program Manager Interns are often assigned to cross-functional projects that involve coordinating between engineering, product, and business teams. These projects can range from launching new product features to improving internal processes or supporting large-scale infrastructure upgrades. Interns are expected to manage timelines, facilitate communication, and ensure project milestones align with broader company objectives. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into the role of a TPM and demonstrates how effective program management drives organizational success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical program manager intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Program Manager Intern, you generally need a strong background in project management, technical understanding (often in software or product development), and relevant educational progress in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira or Asana, as well as basic knowledge of Agile methodologies, is typically required. Outstanding communication, organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate across teams are crucial soft skills for this position. These competencies ensure you can effectively coordinate projects, bridge gaps between technical and non-technical stakeholders, and drive successful outcomes within set timelines.

Job description

Role: Technical Program Manager - Enterprise Data Modernization (Google Cloud Platform)

Location: Concord, CA (Hybrid)

Duration: Long term Project

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a visionary Technical Program Manager (TPM) to lead and orchestrate our enterprise-wide migration from a legacy Teradata ecosystem to the Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform).

As the TPM, you will be the single-threaded owner responsible for the successful delivery of the entire data modernization program. You will operate at a strategic level, looking weeks and months ahead to ensure all parallel workstreams - coordinating infrastructure setup and data migration to application cutover and business adoption are synchronized and aligned. Your mission is to anticipate challenges, manage complex interdependencies, and ensure the program delivers on its promise of transforming our business capabilities.

What You''ll Do (Responsibilities):

Program Strategy & Vision: Own and drive the overarching strategy for the data platform modernization. Define the program structure, key phases (e.g., assessment, pilot, phased migration, decommission), and the critical path to success.

End-to-End Program Ownership: Manage the entire portfolio of projects that constitute the migration program. This includes multiple data migration tracks, framework development, security and governance setup, and stakeholder training initiatives.

Strategic Roadmapping & Proactive Planning: Look beyond the current sprint and quarter. Develop and maintain a long-term, integrated program roadmap that anticipates future bottlenecks, resource needs, and technical hurdles. You are always a step ahead.

Interdependency Management: Master the complex web of dependencies between technical teams (data engineering, security, networking, infrastructure) and business units. Ensure that no track is blocked and that all teams are moving in concert.

Executive-Level Communication & Governance: Serve as the primary interface between the program and executive leadership. Establish the program governance model and provide regular, clear, and concise updates on progress, risks, and financial forecasting. Translate deep technical complexity into strategic business impact.

โ— Architectural Oversight: While not the primary architect, you must possess the technical depth to engage in architectural discussions, challenge assumptions, and understand the trade-offs of key technical decisions to ensure they align with the program''s long-term goals.

โ— Risk & Ambiguity Navigation: Proactively identify, quantify, and create mitigation plans for program-level risks. Thrive in ambiguity, creating clarity and actionable plans where none exist.

Skill & Experience Requirements

This section details the specific qualifications for this high-impact leadership role. The requirements are intentionally high to reflect the strategic importance and complexity of the program.

Required Qualifications (Must-Haves):

Proven Teradata to Google Cloud Platform Migration Program Leadership: You must have prior experience as a Program Manager or senior leader directly managing a large-scale, end-to-end Teradata (or similar) to the Google Cloud Platform

Migration for an enterprise..

โ— Extensive Program Management Experience: 15+ years in the technology industry, with at least 5+ years in a Technical Program Management role managing a portfolio of complex, cross-functional projects.

โ— Strategic Foresight & Planning: A demonstrated ability to "look around corners," anticipate future challenges, and build long-term, multi-phase program plans that account for technical and business complexities.

โ— Deep Technical Acumen in Data Architecture: You are not required to code, but you must be fluent in the language of data. You must have a strong understanding of: Legacy data warehousing (especially Teradata architecture).

Modern cloud data platforms (BigQuery, GCS, Dataproc).

ETL/ELT patterns, data modeling, and data governance (Dataplex).

The nuances of migrating complex logic, not just data.

โ— Exceptional Cross-Functional Leadership: Proven ability to lead and influence without direct authority across a wide range of teams, from VPs to individual engineers, across both onshore and offshore locations.

โ— Executive Presence: The ability to command a room, articulate a complex program to a C-level audience, and build confidence through clarity, conviction, and data-driven reporting.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Haves):

Hands-On Technical Background: Previous experience as a Data Architect, Solutions

Architect, or Senior Data Engineer before moving into program management.

โ— Broad On-Premise Knowledge: Experience with the other components of the legacy stack, such as Informatica and Hadoop, and their migration paths.

โ— Formal Certifications: A Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect certification is a strong plus. Program Management Professional (PgMP) or PMP certifications are also highly valued.

โ— FinOps Acumen: Experience managing and forecasting the financial aspects
