What is a technical program manager internship?

A Technical Program Manager (TPM) Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in managing technical projects and programs. Interns work alongside experienced TPMs to coordinate teams, set project timelines, identify risks, and ensure project deliverables meet technical and business requirements. This role often requires a combination of technical knowledge, organizational skills, and strong communication abilities. Interns may also participate in meetings, track progress, and help resolve issues as they arise. The internship provides valuable exposure to project management processes within a technology-driven environment.

What types of projects does a technical program manager intern typically work on, and how do these projects contribute to the company's goals?

Technical Program Manager Interns are often assigned to cross-functional projects that involve coordinating between engineering, product, and business teams. These projects can range from launching new product features to improving internal processes or supporting large-scale infrastructure upgrades. Interns are expected to manage timelines, facilitate communication, and ensure project milestones align with broader company objectives. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into the role of a TPM and demonstrates how effective program management drives organizational success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical program manager intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Program Manager Intern, you generally need a strong background in project management, technical understanding (often in software or product development), and relevant educational progress in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira or Asana, as well as basic knowledge of Agile methodologies, is typically required. Outstanding communication, organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate across teams are crucial soft skills for this position. These competencies ensure you can effectively coordinate projects, bridge gaps between technical and non-technical stakeholders, and drive successful outcomes within set timelines.

Job description

Technical Program Manager

Location- onsite Sterling, VA- Full time

About Molg

Hey! We’re Molg 👋 We’re building robotic systems that make electronics manufacturing circular. We work with hyperscalers and leading electronics manufacturers to automate how hardware is designed, manufactured, disassembled, repaired, reused, and recovered. Using robotics, computational design, and AI, our systems turn today’s e-waste into resilient, data-driven supply chains—and change how electronics are made in the first place.

The Role

We're looking for a Technical Program Manager who thrives at the intersection of engineering and execution. You'll lead complex technical programs from concept through delivery, partnering closely with Engineering, Product, and Business teams to ensure we're building the right things—and delivering them with quality, speed, and predictability.

This role requires deep expertise in software development programs, combined with a strong systems mindset. While your primary focus will be driving software execution, you'll also coordinate work spanning hardware, firmware, robotics, and manufacturing. You don't need to be an expert in every discipline, but you do need to understand how they come together to build world-class robotic systems.

In This Role, You Will

  • Lead complex technical programs from planning through successful delivery, ensuring milestones, dependencies, and priorities stay aligned.

  • Drive execution across Software, Robotics, Hardware, Firmware, Product, and Business teams.

  • Build and maintain integrated program plans that account for cross-functional dependencies across multiple engineering disciplines.

  • Identify risks early, remove blockers, and proactively drive decisions before they impact delivery.

  • Facilitate clear communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders, creating alignment around priorities, timelines, and trade-offs.

  • Partner with engineering leaders to balance scope, quality, and delivery schedules in a fast-moving startup environment.

  • Establish lightweight, scalable program management practices that improve visibility and execution without adding unnecessary processes.

Reporting structure

This role reports directly to the Director of Software.

Who You Are

  • You have significant experience leading complex technical programs in fast-paced engineering organizations.

  • You possess deep knowledge of modern software development lifecycles and are comfortable partnering closely with software engineering teams throughout planning, development, testing, and release.

  • You have a strong systems perspective and understand how software interacts with hardware, firmware, robotics, and manufacturing to deliver integrated products.

  • You've successfully managed multidisciplinary engineering programs involving hardware and software. Experience in robotics, embedded systems, autonomous systems, industrial automation, IoT, or other complex physical products is highly preferred.

  • You can quickly understand technical concepts and facilitate productive conversations across diverse engineering disciplines.

  • You build credibility through technical curiosity, thoughtful communication, and strong execution—not formal authority.

  • You're highly organized, comfortable navigating ambiguity, and energized by solving complex cross-functional challenges.

Who we are

We spend our days building robotic systems, developing complex assembly intelligence software, and designing the next generation of circular products for our customers. Given the importance of working hands-on with physical systems, we are a 100% in-person team collaboratively working in our industrial space in Sterling, VA, down the road from the largest data center market in the world. Our facility includes a variety of robots, CNC milling machines, 3D printers, and all the tools needed to build and test our products. It is important to us that anyone on our team that is interested in learning how to use our various pieces of equipment and machinery is taught and can gain the skills and appreciation for making physical things.

Thing to know

We’re a hands-on collaborative team with big ambitions, and there’s a good amount of context-switching. We expect people to be autonomous and drive their own work to completion. We are scrappy and looking to build a great sustainable company for years to come. As a growing company and startup, priorities may shift as customer or business requirements change. We strive to empower individuals with context and decision-making power to meet this need.
