General Description / Primary Purpose

The Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Camps provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for a year-round Competitive Sports program that includes intramural sports, club sports, open recreation in the Field House, special events and facility rentals, and the Youth Sports and Fitness Camp. Under the direction of an Associate Director or above, this position designs, implements, evaluates, and interprets department processes, policies, and risk management systems so programs are safe, inclusive, fiscally responsible, and aligned with University of North Florida Recreation and Wellness goals.

This position supervises two full-time coordinators, student employees, volunteers, interns, and camp staff; manages program budgets, equipment, facilities, records, and web-based systems; collaborates with campus partners, Student Government, Athletics, the RecWell Business Office, and external clients; and uses assessment data, participation trends, and industry best practices to improve programs, staff training, facility use, revenue processes, and student engagement.

Job Functions

Program Administration and Strategic Leadership

Administer a comprehensive Competitive Sports portfolio, including intramurals, club sports, Field House open recreation, special events and facility rentals, and the Youth Sports and Fitness Camp.

Set unit vision, goals, service expectations, and annual priorities in support of departmental goals and student engagement outcomes.

Develop, implement, interpret, and periodically revise program policies, procedures, manuals, sportsmanship expectations, and operating standards.

Support campus and external facility-use requests for RecWell courts, fields, and the Field House, including pricing models, contracts, invoicing, and scheduling systems.

Assist with strategies and objectives that strengthen program participation, access, service quality, and operational consistency.

Supervision, Training, and Staff Development

Supervise two full-time coordinators and provide leadership for Competitive Sports, Field House, special event, and summer camp staffing structures.

Provide indirect oversight for more than 60 student employees, including competitive sports supervisors, officials, referees, safety monitors, Field House staff, special event staff, camp staff, and other assigned student or temporary personnel.

Recruit, train, schedule, coach, and evaluate staff, students, volunteers, graduate assistants, and interns as assigned.

Design and deliver presentations, workshops, official training, onboarding materials, and ongoing staff development resources.

Encourage professional engagement and committee service among direct reports and support staff growth through relevant campus and professional development opportunities.

Budget, Business Operations, and Systems Management

Manage financial decisions within the program scope and support annual and long-term budget planning for the Competitive Sports operations.

Work closely with the RecWell Business Office in support of A&S funds, summer camp fees, auxiliary revenue, external and internal client billing, and event-related collections.

Maintain a repair and replacement plan for Competitive Sports facilities, equipment, and program needs.

Use web-based and desktop systems, including EMS, ActiveNet, IMLeagues, and similar applications, for scheduling, staff records, program administration, billing support, reports, and operational documentation.

Maintain clear, current, and accessible web information for the unit and summer camp in partnership with the RecWell Business Office.

Operations, Facilities, Equipment, and Risk Management

Oversee general operations of the Field House, outdoor sport recreation areas, fields, and Competitive Sports program spaces.

Develop and maintain a comprehensive risk management program for Competitive Sports and Camps, including periodic review of systems, manuals, tools, emergency action plans, and best practices.

Implement facility and equipment inspections, preventive maintenance checklists, routine reports, and hazard identification processes that support safe operations.

Maintain an equipment inventory system that tracks program and facility equipment, anticipated shelf life, replacement timing, and reordering needs.

Monitor activities and events in large program areas and identify potential hazards during facility inspections and program delivery.

Campus Collaboration and External Relationships

Collaborate with the Office of Dean of Students and the Office of Student Accountability and Resolution regarding conduct considerations related to Competitive Sports participation.

Coordinate with Athletics to support athletic team needs for RecWell fields and facilities and RecWell-managed events in the Arena.

Maintain working relationships with Student Government agencies, Osprey Involvement Center, Osprey Life and Productions, Fraternity and Sorority Life, and other campus partners for cross-collaboration and program engagement.

Support Camps on Campus program coordination and maintain professional association involvement with the American Camp Association for summer camp management best practices.

Maintain professional association involvement with NIRSA to remain current with Competitive Sports standards, training practices, and program trends.

Marketing, Assessment, and Continuous Improvement

Develop and support marketing strategies that increase awareness and participation in Competitive Sports, Camps, Field House programs, and related special events.

Collaborate with campus marketing and communication resources such as Osprey Update, events calendars, publications, Spinnaker media, and culturally relevant social media tools.

Implement participation assessment tools and maintain accurate program statistics, survey data, and usage reports.

Prepare program reports for departmental, annual report, and Student Government needs, including analysis of participation, program use, trends, and improvement recommendations.

Analyze statistics, surveys, evaluations, and operational data to inform strategic planning recommendations and continuous improvement for the Competitive Sports Unit.

Marginal Functions

Travel to professional conferences, association meetings, or professional development opportunities as funding and operational needs allow.

Maintain professional certifications, memberships, or registry affiliations relevant to Competitive Sports and camp administration.

During declared campus emergencies, perform assigned job-related duties at a designated campus, off-campus, or remote location as directed.

Required Qualifications

Master's and 2+ years of relevant experience or Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219.

Departmental Requirements

Reliability and Schedule: Must be able to work evening and weekend hours based on program, event, and operational needs.

Communication: Must communicate effectively with participants, student employees, professional staff, campus partners, families, vendors, and external clients orally and in writing. Communication must be appropriate for staff training, presentations, participant education, customer service, and representation of the program area and department.

Visual and Auditory Abilities: Must have visual and auditory abilities sufficient to monitor activities and events in areas measuring approximately 26,000 square feet and to identify potential hazards during facility inspections.

Technology and Equipment: Must be proficient with computers and department-relevant web-based applications, including scheduling, registration, billing, records management, reporting, and program operations systems such as EMS, ActiveNet, IMLeagues, and similar applications. Must be able to operate standard office equipment and sport or recreation equipment pertinent to the work area.

Professional Standards: Must maintain knowledge of current trends, risk management practices, training standards, and professional resources relevant to Competitive Sports, Camps, facility operations, and student employee development.
