What Are Soldering Jobs?

In soldering, you use solder equipment to work with different metal types, and you may perform thru-hole, surface mount, or hand soldering. As a solderer, you may repair a variety of electronic equipment, jewelry, and other items that can be fixed by hand. Your duties include following and reading all work schematics and procedures, documenting errors and production, and completing the necessary paperwork. You may also be responsible for maintaining your equipment and workstation as well as performing quality control checks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Soldering Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Soldering Technician, you need strong manual dexterity, attention to detail, and an understanding of electronic components, often backed by a high school diploma or technical training. Experience with soldering irons, reflow ovens, and familiarity with IPC certification standards are commonly required. Patience, precision, and the ability to follow detailed instructions set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial to ensure the production of high-quality, reliable electronic assemblies and to maintain efficiency and safety in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by soldering professionals on the job?

Soldering professionals often encounter challenges such as working with intricate or densely packed circuit boards, which require steady hands and keen attention to detail. Maintaining consistent solder quality under varying environmental conditions, like temperature and humidity, can also be demanding. Additionally, soldering technicians must ensure that their work meets strict industry standards and may need to troubleshoot faulty connections or rework assemblies. Effective communication with engineers and team members is essential to resolve issues quickly and maintain production schedules.

What is the difference between Soldering vs Electronics Technician?

Job Title: Soldering Technician – Cable Assembly Precision Soldering Associate

Job Description

This role focuses on precision hand soldering and manual cable assembly for highly complex cable and wire harness solutions used in technology, industrial, aerospace, defense, and medical applications. You will build and inspect printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), cable, wire, and harness interconnects in a high-mix, low-volume environment that follows strict quality, traceability, and regulatory standards. You will work to IPC-A-610, IPC-A-620, J-STD-001, and customer-specific requirements while supporting both prototype and production builds in a clean, organized electronics manufacturing facility.

Responsibilities

  • Perform precision hand soldering using techniques such as solder cups, J-hooks, and through-hole methods to assemble and build highly complex cables and wire harnesses without damaging insulation or connectors.
  • Assemble cable and wire harness products manually with a high level of accuracy, following IPC standards and engineering specifications.
  • Inspect solder joints and assemblies for quality compliance to IPC-A-610 Class II and III criteria, IPC-A-620, J-STD-001, and customer-specific standards.
  • Use soldering irons, magnification tools (such as mag-lights), microscopes, and ESD-safe tools safely and effectively during assembly and inspection.
  • Interpret and follow engineering drawings, blueprints, work instructions, and assembly documentation to ensure accurate builds and adherence to detailed instructions.
  • Identify and promptly report nonconformances, process deviations, and quality issues to support corrective actions and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain ESD compliance at all times and ensure safe handling of sensitive electronic components where required.
  • Support process engineers and production leads in troubleshooting assembly and solder-related defects and in implementing process improvements.
  • Participate in 5S and Lean manufacturing initiatives to maintain an organized, efficient, and safe workspace.
  • Accurately complete production records, inspection logs, and traceability documentation in compliance with AS9100 and ITAR-related requirements.
  • Support a wide variety of cable and wire harness production activities by performing additional duties as needed, including prototype and production builds.
  • Work effectively as part of a team to meet production schedules and quality goals within a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in precision hand soldering for cable and wire harness assembly, including solder cups, J-hooks, and through-hole soldering techniques.
  • Ability to meet and apply IPC-A-610, IPC-A-620, and J-STD-001 soldering standards in wire harness and cable assembly (certification preferred).
  • Strong manual dexterity and fine motor skills for detailed soldering and assembly work on small components and intricate harnesses.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, diagrams, work instructions, and other assembly documentation.
  • Attention to detail and a strong focus on quality standards, including precise crimping, soldering, documentation, and testing.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and reliable color vision to distinguish wire color coding and other color-coded components.
  • Ability to use small hand tools, soldering irons, magnification tools, microscopes, and ESD-safe equipment effectively and safely.
  • Basic math and technical understanding to support accurate measurements, counts, and interpretation of technical information.
  • Ability to maintain ESD compliance and handle sensitive electronic components correctly.
  • Capability to identify, document, and report nonconformances and quality issues clearly and promptly.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • IPC-A-610, IPC-A-620, and J-STD-001 certifications in soldering and wire harness/cable assembly are strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in an electronics manufacturing environment producing PCBAs, cable assemblies, or wire harnesses.
  • Familiarity with AS9100 and ITAR-related documentation, traceability, and compliance expectations.
  • Experience participating in 5S and Lean manufacturing initiatives.
  • Comfort working with microscopes and other magnification tools for detailed inspection of solder joints and assemblies.
  • Ability to support both prototype and production builds in a high-mix, low-volume environment.
  • Willingness to travel for work assignments related to cable and harness soldering, with the potential for per diem and relocation support.

Why Work Here?

You will join a culture-driven organization that emphasizes a clean, organized, and professional work environment. The team includes many long-tenured employees, reflecting a stable and supportive workplace where people choose to build their careers. You will have clear opportunities for growth into roles such as lead, trainer, or supervisor as you develop your skills and take on new responsibilities. As you earn additional certifications and cross-train in new areas, you can receive pay increases that recognize your expanding expertise. The company supports mobility by offering options for travel assignments with per diem and the possibility of permanent relocation, providing flexibility and long-term career potential.

Work Environment

The role is based in a clean electronics manufacturing facility focused on high-quality PCBAs, cable, wire, and harness assemblies. You will work at your own dedicated workstation, completing your portion of the assembly process within a structured production flow. The environment follows ESD controls, and you will wear a smock and ESD shoe straps while on the production floor to protect sensitive electronic components. Operations adhere to ISO 9001, AS9100, and ITAR standards, emphasizing traceability, compliance, and quality. You will use soldering irons, microscopes, mag-lights, and other ESD-safe tools as part of daily work. The standard schedule is Monday - Friday (Occasional Saturdays): 7am - 3:30pm or 3pm - 11:30pm.
