What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Apprentice, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and typically a basic knowledge of computer science principles. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, foundational programming languages such as Python or Java, and exposure to development environments are often expected. Curiosity, willingness to learn, effective communication, and teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for adapting to new technologies, collaborating with senior developers, and building a strong foundation for a successful software engineering career.

What types of projects and tasks can a Software Apprentice expect to work on during their apprenticeship?

As a Software Apprentice, you can expect to work on a variety of real-world projects under the guidance of experienced developers. Typical tasks may include writing and debugging code, assisting with software testing, participating in code reviews, and collaborating on team projects using agile methodologies. Apprentices often rotate through different teams or areas, allowing exposure to both front-end and back-end development, as well as opportunities to learn about version control, documentation, and deployment processes. This hands-on experience helps apprentices build foundational skills and gain practical knowledge that supports their progression into more advanced software development roles.

What are Software Apprentices?

Software Apprentices are entry-level professionals who participate in structured learning programs to gain hands-on experience in software development. These programs are designed to help individuals learn coding, software engineering principles, and industry best practices while working alongside experienced developers. Apprenticeships typically combine on-the-job training with mentorship and sometimes include classroom instruction. The goal is to prepare apprentices for full-time roles as software engineers or developers by the end of the program.

What is the difference between Software Apprentice vs Software Developer?

Job description

Are you ready to take on pivotal work that will aid Gordian Biotechnology in pinpointing the most promising therapeutic targets for the development of novel drugs? Join our Apprenticeship Program and help us on our mission to cure age-related disease. We want people to lead longer, healthier lives and wake up every morning, more capable than the day before!
Our Destination:
Gordian Biotechnology is a therapeutics company whose mission is to cure age-related disease and wake up every morning more capable than the day before.
Traditional ex vivo screening methods have failed to produce effective treatments, as age-related diseases have complex causes that include interactions with the aged environment.
To address this problem, Gordian's platform is the first and only to enable pooled in vivo tests at scale, across different species of diseased animals reflecting patient profiles. We are able to deliver and test hundreds of therapeutics in individual animals, and scale efficacy testing to rapidly prioritize targets and interventions with a clear path toward development (more info on our website).
We are running this discovery engine to ensure an abundance of therapeutic hypotheses can be tested for complex diseases, eventually mapping out the effects of every druggable target across many diseases, and advancing programs both internally and through collaborations with external partners. By working across related sets of indications, we can identify medicines with impacts on age-related multimorbidity.
About the Role:
As our Data Infrastructure/Software Apprentice, you'll be instrumental in building and maintaining the computational backbone that powers Gordian's discovery engine. You will work alongside our platform and data teams to design scalable pipelines, optimize high-performance computing (HPC) workflows, and ensure our in vivo screening data flows seamlessly from collection to analysis.
This apprenticeship offers a holistic experience in early-stage biotech, allowing you to refine technical skills while undertaking substantive projects that expand your knowledge of both science and the business of science. As a full-time team member, you will collaborate closely with disease specialists, gene therapists, and data teams in a collaborative matrix environment. You will gain an insider's perspective into a rapidly growing startup and see how software engineering directly accelerates biotech discovery-taking our platform from concept to delivering insights that drive drug development.
What You'll Learn:
In this track, you will learn how software and data infrastructure support large-scale genomic analysis. Your experience will include:
  • Production-Grade Code: Learning to write robust, scalable code for biological data.
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Gaining hands-on experience with Google Cloud and architecting systems for real-time data processing.
  • Workflow Orchestration & Containerization: Utilizing tools to manage complex computational systems and process in vivo screening data.
  • High-Performance Computing (HPC): Managing HPC clusters to support massive genomic datasets.
  • Scientific Insight: Seeing how high-dimensional screening data is transformed into practical insight through interactive tools.

Beyond technical skills, you will gain exposure to startup operations and the adaptability required to build a fast-moving company. This includes learning through company lunch and learns, monthly industry happy hours, and 1:1 time with our founders.
And You:
  • You want a chance to do your best work, immerse yourself and excel, alongside people who will inspire you and whom you'll be excited to spend your days with.
  • You want to play a key role in an early-stage startup: A fast-paced environment full of both uncertainty and new challenges, demanding relentless resourcefulness, but full of opportunities and excitement.
  • You are excited to use cutting-edge technology to find the best therapeutic targets, and turn those into drugs.
  • You are organized and have a history of managing and collaborating on time-sensitive projects, working across multiple teams.
  • You have foundational knowledge of data infrastructure and can articulate how this apprenticeship supports your long-term development in the field.

Please note: The application window is closing on May 7th
Our Journey:
Our mission is audacious, and the path will be full of both challenges and excitement. Two things characterize the Gordian experience: 1) We work as a team, with ownership in our own roles and trust in each other. 2) We strive for extraordinary outcomes, and in doing so grow our skills and capability.
Team - Relying on each other begins with transparency. We set clear goals, visibly connecting individuals and teams to our company objectives. This empowers each of us to make autonomous decisions about our work, knowing how they will affect the bigger picture. Our communication happens out in the open and our team is geared towards helping each other out. We provide support for each others' projects, both experimentally as well as through "pre-mortem" meetings to discuss possible failure modes and experimental design. We give and receive feedback, share mistakes, and ask for help.
Extraordinary - Every day, we ask ourselves "could this process/outcome be even better?". Knowing our overall mission, we do what we think helps us make the most progress and we don't shy away from big challenges or unknown territory, but find a way to excel. Our colleagues are amazing, both at what they do and as people. They inspire us to keep up, to not let them down, and be inspiring in return.

The pay range for this role is:
70,000 - 80,000 USD per year (South San Francisco)
