The main difference between a Software Manager and a Software Engineer lies in their roles. Software Managers focus on team leadership, project management, and strategic planning, while Software Engineers are primarily responsible for coding and developing software. Both roles require technical knowledge, but their responsibilities and work focus differ significantly.

How does a Software Manager typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities?

Software Managers often juggle both technical and leadership duties, but the balance can vary depending on the organization and team size. In many cases, Software Managers spend a significant portion of their time on people management tasks such as mentoring team members, conducting code reviews, planning sprints, and facilitating communication between stakeholders. However, they may also remain involved in architectural decisions or critical technical challenges to stay connected with the team's work. Effective Software Managers prioritize delegating coding tasks to their team while focusing on enabling productivity, resolving blockers, and ensuring project alignment with business goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Manager, you need a strong background in software development, project management, and leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Agile methodologies, version control systems like Git, and project management tools such as Jira is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills set outstanding managers apart in this role. These competencies are essential for delivering projects on time, fostering effective collaboration, and driving high-performing engineering teams.

Job description

Vidoori is a digital transformation leader recognised for delivering excellence in cloud and software solutions. As our engineering and product capabilities grow, we are seeking a motivated Software Manager to lead and develop highโ€‘performing engineering teams, drive delivery of robust products and services, and help shape our engineering culture within an inclusive environment that values continuous learning and pragmatic innovation.
Role Overview - Software Manager
Reporting to senior engineering and product leadership, the Software Manager will be responsible for people management, technical leadership and delivery oversight for one or more engineering squads or platforms. This role combines handsโ€‘on engineering judgement with strategic team development, crossโ€‘team collaboration and close partnership with product and design to ensure dependable, scalable and maintainable software outcomes. You will champion engineering standards, foster career growth, remove operational impediments and align technical execution with business priorities.
Key Responsibilities - Lead, Coach and Deliver
  • Lineโ€‘manage and coach engineers, fostering professional growth through regular feedback, career planning and performance reviews; promote an inclusive, supportive team culture.
  • Own delivery outcomes for assigned teams: set clear objectives, manage capacity and priorities, and ensure features and platform work are delivered to quality, on schedule and with measurable outcomes.
  • Provide technical guidance and decision support; participate in architecture reviews, design discussions and codebase improvements to maintain healthy, evolvable systems.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers and stakeholders to define priorities, refine requirements and balance technical debt with new development.
  • Drive engineering best practices including code reviews, testing strategies, CI/CD, observability and release processes to increase reliability and delivery predictability.
  • Identify, track and mitigate technical risks and dependencies across teams; escalate appropriately and coordinate remediation with engineering leads and architects.
  • Promote continuous improvement through retrospectives, metrics (lead time, cycle time, quality indicators) and process optimisation.
  • Recruit and onboard talent to grow capability; contribute to hiring decisions, interview processes and induction programmes.
  • Champion diversity, equity and inclusion in hiring, mentoring and dayโ€‘toโ€‘day team practices.
Essential Skills and Experience - Management & Technical Competence
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven experience (typically 7+ years) in software engineering with a minimum of 2-3 years in a people management or technical lead role.
  • Strong technical literacy across modern web/cloud tech stacks, microservices, APIs and deployment patterns; able to engage constructively with senior engineers and architects.
  • Demonstrable experience delivering software in an agile environment, with practical knowledge of sprint planning, backlog management and release coordination.
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills; able to communicate tradeโ€‘offs and build consensus across technical and nonโ€‘technical audiences.
  • Experience with delivery and engineering tooling such as Git, CI/CD pipelines, issue tracking (e.g. Jira), and collaboration platforms (e.g. Confluence).
  • Proven ability to hire, mentor and retain engineering talent and to foster a collaborative, psychologically safe team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to produce clear engineering artefacts including runbooks, postโ€‘mortems and technical roadmaps.
Desirable Skills - Extended Capability
  • Previous experience managing platform, infrastructure or APIโ€‘centric engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP), infrastructure as code and observability tooling.
  • Knowledge of security and compliance considerations relevant to public sector or regulated environments.
  • Experience contributing to engineering playbooks, internal training or community of practice initiatives.
  • Professional certifications in leadership, agile or cloud technologies are advantageous.
Benefits and Career Development - Growth at Vidoori
  • Competitive base salary with performanceโ€‘related bonus and incentives linked to delivery and technical outcomes.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including hybrid options to support a healthy work-life balance.
  • Supportive and inclusive culture with investment in professional development, training and mentorship opportunities.
  • Clear career progression into senior engineering leadership, programme management or product roles.
  • Work on impactful projects across public sector and commercial clients, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Application Guidance - Opportunities at Vidoori
  • Location: Hybrid (DMV Area)
  • Employment Type: Fullโ€‘time
  • Eligibility: Must be U.S. Citizen
