How does working in an SMB (Small and Medium Business) environment differ from larger organizations in terms of team dynamics and daily responsibilities?

In an SMB setting, employees often wear multiple hats and collaborate closely across departments, which can provide a diverse range of experiences and responsibilities. The work environment tends to be more agile, with quicker decision-making and direct access to leadership. This structure allows for greater visibility, opportunities to take initiative, and faster career growth, but may also mean facing challenges such as limited resources and the need to adapt quickly to change. Team members are typically expected to be proactive, flexible, and open to continuous learning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SMB (Small and Medium-sized Business) Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an SMB Manager, you need strong business acumen, financial management skills, and a background in business administration or a related field. Familiarity with CRM platforms, accounting software like QuickBooks, and data analytics tools is typically required. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help navigate team dynamics and customer relationships. These competencies are crucial for driving business growth, optimizing operations, and maintaining a competitive edge in dynamic markets.

What are SMBs?

SMB stands for Small and Medium-sized Businesses. These organizations typically have a limited number of employees and annual revenue compared to larger enterprises. In most regions, small businesses have fewer than 100 employees, while medium-sized businesses can have up to 999 employees. SMBs play a vital role in the economy by creating jobs, fostering innovation, and contributing to local communities. The specific definition of SMB can vary depending on the country or industry.

Head of Partnerships, SMB

Emergent Labs

San Francisco, CA

Job description

Emergent builds autonomous coding agents that replace traditional software development by generating, testing, and deploying production applications directly from plain-language intent. Our systems run in production at global scale and are used to build millions of real applications.

Since public launch, Emergent has reached $100M ARR in 8 months. 6M+ users across 190+ countries have built 6.5M+ applications on Emergent. We've raised $100M+, backed by Khosla Ventures, SoftBank, Google, Lightspeed, Prosus, Together, and Y Combinator.

We're solving the hard part of AI-driven software creation: correctness, reliability, security, and scale in real production systems. The team is built by repeat founders, Olympiad medalists, and leaders from Google, Amazon, and Dropbox.

We're hiring builders who want ownership, speed, and impact at global scale.

The Role

We're hiring a Head of Partnerships focused entirely on the SMB ecosystem. You will own the end-to-end strategy for identifying, signing, and scaling partnerships that drive value for SMB customers. You will define where Emergent should exist by default across SaaS platforms, marketplaces, agencies, consultants, and other SMB ecosystems. You will work closely with product, growth, marketing, and founders to build integrations, channel partnerships, and repeatable programs that turn partnerships into a meaningful source of pipeline, product adoption, and revenue. This is not traditional business development. This is building distribution.

What You'll Do:

  • Own the full partnership lifecycle from sourcing and outreach to negotiation, activation, and account management.
  • Identify and prioritize the SMB ecosystems where Emergent should exist, including SaaS platforms, marketplaces, agencies, consultants, and channel partners.
  • Build and scale integration, channel, and platform partnerships that drive pipeline, product adoption, and revenue.
  • Work closely with product and engineering to shape integrations and co-build solutions for SMB customers.
  • Create repeatable partner programs, including onboarding, incentives, co-selling motions, and enablement.
  • Launch co-GTM initiatives with partners across webinars, content, events, email, and marketplace distribution.
  • Define and track KPIs across pipeline, revenue, activation, and retention.
  • Build the playbooks and systems that will scale the partnerships function over time.

What We're Looking For:

  • 8 to 10 years of experience in partnerships or business development at high-growth SaaS or technology companies.
  • Strong understanding of the SMB buyer and experience building partnerships that drive measurable business outcomes.
  • Experience with integration, channel, platform, or ecosystem partnerships; experience at an AI SaaS company is a plus.
  • Ability to think in distribution, not just deals, and move quickly from idea to execution.
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally across founders, product, engineering, and growth teams.
  • Strong communication skills, executive presence, and a high level of ownership.

Why Join Us:

  • Own and grow the SMB partnerships engine for one of the fastest-growing AI companies in the world.
  • Founding role with direct access to founders and leadership.
  • Define how Emergent scales beyond direct sales by building a distribution layer for SMBs that compounds over time.
  • Real ownership, meaningful equity, and global impact.
  • Opportunity to build one of Emergent's largest growth channels and create a world-class partnerships organization.
  • Fast learning and a clear path to building and leading the function.

Benefits and Perks:

  • 401(k)
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off: take the time you need to recharge and come back refreshed
  • Flexible Working Hours: work arrangements that fit your life and commitments

The compensation range for this role is: 180,000 USD - 250,000 USD + Bonus + ESOPs
Let's build the future of software together.
