What is an SMB Sales?

An SMB Sales job involves selling products or services to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Sales representatives in this role identify potential customers, build relationships, and close deals to help businesses grow. They often work with a high volume of leads, use consultative selling techniques, and meet sales targets. Success in this role requires strong communication skills, product knowledge, and the ability to understand the unique needs of SMB customers.

What does an SMB Sales person do?

A typical day in SMB Sales involves a mix of prospecting for new clients, conducting outreach via calls or emails, and scheduling product demonstrations or meetings with potential small and mid-sized business customers. You'll spend time managing your pipeline in a CRM system, following up on leads, and working closely with marketing or product teams to align on messaging and strategy. Team collaboration is also common, as SMB Sales professionals often brainstorm best practices or share insights to improve results. The day is fast-paced and varied, offering regular opportunities to develop both your sales and interpersonal skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in SMB Sales?

To thrive as an SMB Sales professional, you need strong sales acumen, an understanding of small and medium business needs, and experience with outbound prospecting, often supported by a degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, sales engagement tools, and sometimes certification in sales methodologies such as Sandler or Challenger is highly beneficial. Excellent communication, active listening, and relationship-building skills help you stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for efficiently identifying opportunities, fostering client trust, and driving revenue growth in a competitive market.

Job description

About NexHealth
Our healthcare system remains frustratingly analog. When you live in a world of one-tap car rides, instant meal delivery, and unlimited streaming, why do you still have to call to schedule a doctor's appointment and fill out a clipboard in the waiting room?
NexHealth's mission is to accelerate innovation in healthcare by connecting patients, providers, and developers. We're building the infrastructure layer for modern healthcare, connecting thousands of fragmented, on-premise, and closed EHR systems into a single, modern platform that powers software, APIs, payments, and patient experiences across the ecosystem.
  • Founded: 2017
  • Headquarters: San Francisco, CA
  • Funding: $177M Series C
  • Employees: 200+
  • Trusted by tens of thousands of providers and hundreds of health-tech developers - forging the infrastructure layer that modern healthcare needs

About the Role
We're looking for a hands-on, people-first SMB Account Executive Manager to lead and scale our SMB sales team. In this role, you'll be responsible for hiring, coaching, and developing a team of Account Executives who drive growth and adoption across our SMB customer base.
As the SMB AE Manager, you'll own your team's number, build the systems and rituals that make reps successful, and act as a force multiplier for a high-performing and deeply customer-driven organization. You'll balance day-to-day coaching with the strategic work of building a repeatable, scalable sales motion. This is a full-time, hybrid role available in select cities.
What You'll Do
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of SMB Account Executives, owning their ramp, performance, and career growth
  • Own and forecast your team's pipeline and revenue targets, holding the team accountable to consistent execution
  • Hire and onboard top sales talent as the team scales - raise the bar with every hire
  • Run high-quality coaching: deal reviews, call coaching, pipeline inspection, and 1:1s that drive measurable improvement
  • Build and refine the SMB sales playbook - codify what works and scale it across the team
  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, and Customer Success to surface customer feedback and influence the roadmap
  • Help shape a new and fast-scaling business motion - bring ideas, test quickly, and iterate

What You'll Bring
  • 2+ years of sales management experience, leading a team of quota-carrying AEs, ideally in SaaS
  • A track record of full-cycle closing success before moving into management
  • Demonstrated ability to hire, coach, and develop AEs to consistently hit and exceed targets
  • Strong command of pipeline management, forecasting, and sales analytics
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a genuine customer-first mindset
  • A founder mentality - comfortable operating in ambiguity and building process where little exists
  • Proficiency with CRM tools (e.g., Salesforce) and modern sales technologies
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% for onsite office visits

Compensation
Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed below is the total target cash compensation (TTCC) and includes base compensation and variable compensation in the form of commissions. Variable compensation type is determined by your role and level. Other benefits may include stock options, an unlimited paid time off policy, and up to 100% coverage on medical, vision and dental insurance.
NexHealth Compensation Range
$200,000-$240,000 USD
Benefits
  • Full Medical, Dental, and Vision (up to 100% covered)
  • 401K and commuter benefits
  • Flexible PTO
  • High-impact work that directly improves the healthcare experience for millions

Our Values
  • Solve the customer's problems, not yoursWhen making decisions, think from the perspective of the customer. It's easy to make decisions that make our lives simpler, but not the customers.
  • Do the things others are not willing to doAs a Nexer, always go after the hardest problems. Pursue things at the highest quality. Move at the fastest pace.
  • Take ownershipAct like a founder. Own your roles, destinies, mistakes, behavior, and our mission. The buck stops with each of us - no blaming or excuses.
  • Say what's on your mind, with positive intentBe direct, proactive, transparent, and frequent in your communication.
  • Default trustAs a Nexer, you do not have to earn trust, trust is given to you by default. If we by default trust each other, our speed of communication, feedback, information sharing, and overall improvements will be a lot faster.
  • Think in first principlesWe first identify the problem and then break it down to its fundamentals before diving into solutions. We constantly ask "why" to validate our assumptions.
