What is a senior technical designer?

Senior Technical Designers are experienced professionals who bridge the gap between design and engineering teams, ensuring that creative concepts are translated into technically feasible and manufacturable products. They are responsible for overseeing the development process, solving complex design problems, and managing technical specifications. Senior Technical Designers often mentor junior staff, collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, and ensure that projects meet quality, cost, and timeline goals. Their expertise is crucial in fields such as fashion, game development, architecture, and industrial design.

How does a senior technical designer typically collaborate with other departments during a project's development cycle?

A Senior Technical Designer frequently acts as a bridge between design, engineering, and art teams to ensure seamless integration of gameplay features and technical systems. They participate in cross-functional meetings to communicate design intentions, identify feasibility challenges early, and provide technical solutions that maintain creative vision. Regular collaboration includes reviewing prototypes with programmers, aligning visual assets with artists, and gathering feedback from QA to iterate on features efficiently. This collaborative approach helps maintain project coherence and addresses issues before they impact production timelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior technical designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Technical Designer, you need deep expertise in design principles, garment construction, and product development, often supported by a degree in fashion design or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software (such as Adobe Illustrator and Gerber), pattern-making systems, and technical specification tools is crucial. Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills help you effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage complex projects. These skills ensure technical accuracy, product quality, and efficient design processes within fast-paced fashion environments.

Purpose of the Role

As our Technical Designer (Senior), you'll play a key role in bridging design intent with technical delivery across our US studio. Acting as the technical lead from design development through to installation, you'll ensure our creative concepts are translated into robust, buildable solutions while maintaining exceptional technical standards throughout every stage of a project.

This is a US-focused role, supporting the New York studio as its primary responsibility, while collaborating closely with our UK Production team during periods of increased demand. This role requires a detail oriented person with a background in 3D design who can create, interpret and coโ€‘ordinate the build documentation required to bring our work to life. You will assist in all aspects of the production process, including costing and procurement, logistics and administration. Your role will be instrumental in ensuring the seamless execution of projects and contributing to the creation of aweโ€‘inspiring experiences for our clients.

Alongside project work, you'll own document control and technical coordination processes that improve consistency, reduce project risk and support efficient global delivery.

Technical Design & Project Delivery
  • Develop Rhino models from concept through detailed technical design.
  • Translate creative ideas into productionโ€‘ready drawing packages.
  • Produce technical documentation for pricing, fabrication and construction.
  • Carry out site surveys, feasibility studies and architectural coordination.
  • Produce elevations, plans, sections and technical details.
  • Identify technical risks and propose practical solutions โ€“ e.g. structural, code, standards etc.
Technical Coordination
  • Act as the technical point of contact throughout project delivery.
  • Coordinate information between internal teams, clients, consultants and fabricators.
  • Support vendor selection, sampling and technical reviews.
  • Attend client meetings, site visits and installations.
  • Resolve technical queries throughout production.
Document Control
  • Own drawing registers, revision management and version control.
  • Coordinate external drawing submissions.
  • Maintain document control systems across projects.
  • Ensure issued documentation is accurate and current.
  • Identify documentation gaps before they become site issues.
Vendor & Production Support
  • Liaise directly with fabricators and suppliers.
  • Coordinate samples and production approvals.
  • Support quality control during production and installation.
  • Maintain shop drawings and technical records.
What We're Looking For

  • Excellent CAD skills
  • Experience interpreting architectural drawings
  • Knowledge of fabrication methods
  • Experience using Revit/BIM
  • Strong document control and revision management
  • Experience coordinating with architects and fabricators
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Experience within commercial interiors, environmental graphics, architecture, exhibitions or experiential design
  • Selfโ€‘starter โ€“ opportunity to influence and form company procedure
Benefits
  • 10 days paid vacation (increasing with tenure)
  • 11 bank holidays
  • 4 additional days off between Christmas and New Year
  • Goldโ€‘standard health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) eligibility after 3 months
  • Hybrid working model
  • Half a day per month dedicated to creative pursuits
  • Regular team socials
