Job description

Technical Designer - Kids

Kid's apparel brand is seeking a Technical Designer - Kids to join our team in a long term freelance capacity. This role is ideal for a highly experienced technical design professional with a strong background in childrenswear and a sharp eye for fit, construction, and product quality. The right candidate will bring deep technical knowledge, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple categories in a fast-paced environment.

Required Experience: 6+ years of technical design experience in childrenswear. Private label experience is helpful, but not required.

Product Categories: Cut & Sew Knit, Woven, and Swimwear. Sweater experience is a plus, and training can be provided.

Size Range: Preemie through Big Boys 18-20 and Girls 14-16.

Key Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of garment construction and fit
  • Strong understanding of grading and size scaling
  • Solid foundation in patternmaking principles
  • Knowledge of CPSIA and U.S. childrenswear regulations
  • Ability to develop base size measurements from design concept through final production specifications
  • Highly detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working in a fast-paced setting
  • Ability to interpret and support a variety of brand fits and aesthetics
  • Ability to follow tech pack construction details and design comments accurately
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel

Responsibilities

  • Measure and evaluate fit samples, including Proto, Fit, PP, and TOP stages
  • Prepare garments and documentation for fittings
  • Lead fit sessions on mannequins
  • Ensure sample accuracy for construction, trims, finishes, and adherence to tech pack specifications
  • Identify and resolve issues related to garment balance, proportion, and comfort
  • Provide clear, detailed, and actionable fit comments to factories and follow through on corrections
  • Troubleshoot production and quality issues throughout development
  • Conduct PP and TOP quality control checks to confirm garments meet approved standards before customer submission
  • Collaborate closely with Design and Production teams from development through final production
  • Manage sample receiving, shipping, and distribution of sample packages
