Job description

Senior Planner

We are currently seeking a talented and experienced Senior Planner to join our team of professionals. This position offers great opportunity for dynamic, motivated self-starters to work on a variety of work assignments. You'll be a member of our highly respected team of professionals with a full complement of resources to support you and exciting projects to keep you challenged.
Responsibilities:
  • Review and process development applications, including site plans, plats, rezonings, variances, and special exceptions.
  • Ensure compliance with Land Development Codes, zoning regulations, and the Comprehensive Plan.
  • Prepare staff reports, technical analyses, and recommendations for Planning & Zoning Boards, Local Planning Agencies, and City/County Commissions.
  • Provide guidance to developers, engineers, architects, and the public on zoning and development requirements.
  • Conduct research and analysis related to land use, growth management, and community planning initiatives.
  • Participate in long range planning efforts, including Comprehensive Plan updates and amendments.
  • Coordinate with internal departments and external agencies on development review and infrastructure planning.
  • Present at public meetings, hearings, and community workshops.
  • Assist in drafting and updating zoning codes, ordinances, and planning policies.

Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of planning principles, land use regulations, zoning, and growth management practices.
  • Familiarity with Florida planning statutes (Chapter 163, F.S.) and local government processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret site plans, surveys, and engineering drawings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and report writing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
  • Proficiency in GIS, planning software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Geography, or a related field. (Master's degree preferred).
  • Minimum 5-8 years of professional planning experience.
  • Experience working for a municipal or county planning department in Florida preferred.
  • Experience with development review, public hearings, and stakeholder coordination.
  • American Institute or Certified Planners (AICP) certification, or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
  • Membership in the American Planning Association (APA) is a plus.
  • Experience with coastal planning, resiliency, or hurricane related planning consideration is a plus.
