Job description

Payroll Specialist | Fully Remote Opportunity

Base Comp To $90K + Bonus DOE + 100% Employer-Paid Benefits

Client Facing Role | High-Trust, High-Accountability Environment | Strong Work-Life Balance

If you’re someone who truly understands payroll from start to finish and takes pride in getting it right, this role was built for you.

Our client, a fast-growing remote accounting and advisory firm, is expanding and looking to add a Payroll Specialist who can take ownership of payroll processing across multiple clients in a professional, fast-paced environment.

This is not a time-entry role. This is full-cycle payroll ownership, including compliance, tax filings, and tax resolution.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

• Setting up, managing, and running payroll in Gusto for multiple clients
• Owning the full payroll life cycle including wage and hour compliance, calculations, deductions, garnishments, and adjustments
• Running off-cycle, bonus, and commission payrolls as needed
• Preparing and filing payroll tax returns and making quarterly payments in multiple states
• Registering clients for state payroll accounts
• Responding to and resolving state and federal payroll tax notices
• Correcting issues within state payroll tax agency portals
• Recording payroll-related journal entries and assisting with month-end close on non-payroll days
• Supporting bookkeeping tasks as needed when payroll workload allows
• Communicating with clients in a clear, professional, and timely manner

You will be trusted to own payroll completely, not just pass information along.

What Success Looks Like in This Role

• Payroll is processed accurately, on time, every time
• Payroll tax filings and payments are handled proactively, not reactively
• Agency notices are resolved efficiently and correctly
• Clients feel confident knowing payroll is handled by an expert
• You manage multiple clients without things slipping through the cracks

What We’re Looking For

• 3 or more years of full-cycle payroll experience
• Demonstrated experience running payroll for multiple clients, entities, or 1000+ employees
• Hands-on experience with payroll tax filings, payments, and tax resolution
• Ability to read and resolve state and federal tax notices, including manual filings when required
• Strong understanding of payroll laws, employee classifications, and compliance requirements
• Experience with cloud-based payroll systems; Gusto experience is a plus but not required
• Proficiency in Google Sheets and Excel
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, remote environment
• College degree preferred but not required

How We Work

• Fully remote
• Payroll responsibilities do not require full-time hours year-round
• Flexible scheduling with availability during core business hours
• Someone who understands that in a remote setting, a "Cameras On" philosophy is needed to help in building stronger team and client-facing connections
• Clients are professional, respectful, and aligned with how we work
• Low micromanagement culture with high individual accountability

If you are used to owning payroll end-to-end and being trusted as the expert, you will thrive here.

Compensation and Benefits

• Competitive base salary up to $90K DOE
• Annual bonus opportunity
• 401(k) with company match
• 100 percent employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance
• Additional benefits for dependents
• Company-provided equipment and technology
