Location: Primarily LCS Main Office (Midtown Manhattan), travel to various Supportive Housing and Shelter sites for training purposes

About the role

The Director of Training & Learning is responsible for building, shaping, and sustaining Lantern’s training department. This role drives a culture of curiosity, cultural humility, continuous improvement, and evidence-informed practice - all in service of Lantern’s mission to champion the independence and well-being of New Yorkers affected by homelessness.

Essential Functions
  • Design, implement, and evaluate training programs rooted in Lantern’s foundational evidence-based approaches: Housing First, Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, Trauma-Informed Care, and Cultural Humility.
  • Lead the growth of Lantern’s training department, developing a strategic framework that enhances staff competencies and aligns with organizational priorities.
  • Build and manage an annual training calendar of large- and small-scale sessions and workshops, utilizing Lantern’s Relias Learning Management System to meet core competencies and funder-required training guidelines.
  • Directly supervise the Training and Learning Coordinator, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team.
  • Partner with senior leadership, Human Resources, Compliance, and the Data Evaluation & CQI team to develop comprehensive capacity-building programs tailored to Lantern’s diverse workforce.
  • Collaborate with staff at all levels and program participants to ensure training programs are inclusive, reflective of evidence-based approaches, and grounded in direct service experience.
  • Partner with site and team leadership to identify training gaps and develop targeted professional development plans.
  • Establish metrics to track training effectiveness, develop transparent monitoring and reporting systems, and assist with grant applications and reports.
  • Design and lead Lantern’s inclusive Training Committee, with diverse staff and participant/consumer representation.
  • Serve on DEBI, Safety, Harm Reduction, and other organizational committees and working groups focused on clinical documentation, incident review, and policy.
  • Build partnerships with community organizations, funders, regulatory agencies, and external trainers to advance training quality and promote staff safety, well-being, and morale.
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in training, curriculum development, or workforce development within the nonprofit or social services sector, ideally in shelter or supportive housing.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, Trauma-Informed Care, and Cultural Humility.
  • Proven ability to build consensus, motivate staff at all levels, and manage multiple high-priority projects in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 and learning management systems.
Work Environment

This role is based primarily at Lantern’s Main Office in Midtown Manhattan, with regular travel to supportive housing and shelter sites for training purposes.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, climb stairs, and/or kneel. Occasionally the employee will have to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
