What is a recruiter commission?

A recruiter commission is a fee or percentage of a candidate's first-year salary that a recruiter or recruiting agency earns after successfully placing a candidate in a job. This commission structure incentivizes recruiters to find qualified candidates for employers. The amount can vary widely, typically ranging from 15% to 25% of the candidate's starting salary. Some recruiters may work on a flat fee or a retainer basis instead, depending on the agreement with the employer.

What does a recruiter who works on commission do?

As a recruiter who works on commission, your responsibilities are to fill employee positions for companies that are hiring. You carry out your duties internally with a company’s human resources (HR) department or externally with a staffing agency for recruiter commission pay, usually with a base salary plus commission for each candidate you place in a position successfully. Some positions offer only commission after you place a candidate. As an independent recruiter, you work with multiple companies through a staffing agency. As an internal recruiter for one company, you exclusively seek candidates to work at that company.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a recruiter on commission, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Recruiter on commission, you need strong interpersonal skills, talent sourcing abilities, and a proven track record in candidate placement, often supported by a background in human resources or sales. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), recruitment platforms like LinkedIn, and CRM tools is typically required. Exceptional negotiation, resilience, and persuasive communication skills help build relationships and close placements in a competitive market. These skills are critical for consistently meeting placement targets and driving earnings in a commission-based role.

How is the commission structure typically set up for recruiter roles, and what should candidates expect in terms of earning potential and targets?

Recruiter commission structures often combine a base salary with performance-based incentives tied to successful placements. Commission may be a percentage of the placed candidate’s first-year salary or a flat fee, and targets are generally set monthly or quarterly. High performers can significantly boost their earnings, but reaching targets may require proactive sourcing, strong relationship-building, and adaptability to changing hiring needs. It's important to clarify commission details and expectations with potential employers during the interview process.
