Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Novelis Bay Minette, AL team is seeking Process Development Engineer to work in the Bay Minette facility. The Process Development Engineer will develop and implement new products and processes to improve efficiency and reduce costs within Bay Minette aluminum sheet plant. In this task the Process Development Engineer supports, guides and is advised by Bay Minette Manufacturing, Novelis Commercial / Technical Support Teams, Novelis Labs and the aluminum sheet customers to ensure all products meet the customer's requirements and that new and existing products integrate well within the Bay Minette manufacturing system. The Process Development Engineer provides a high degree of responsiveness to customer product issues and opportunities, presenting a positive, effective face for Novelis Bay Minette in the marketplace. The Process Development Engineer expands the boundaries of the current limits of the aluminum sheet marketplace, contributing to new opportunities and the identification or formation of new desirable markets for Bay Minette products.

Responsibilities

  • Actively support Novelis core initiatives around Environment, Health, Safety and Quality.
  • Development, introduction and validation of new products and processes in the aluminum sheet marketplace for the Bay Minette manufacturing system.
  • This key function involves forming close and supportive working relationships with the entire internal Bay Minette manufacturing team, the external Novelis commercial, technical service, laboratory teams and the customers, to transition new products from development to full scale manufacturing.
  • Development of aluminum sheet product lines to improve either their internal performance to Bay Minette or their external performance at the customer.
  • Active coordination, prioritization and support of the metallographic laboratory's analysis and assessment of defective materials.
  • Lead and/or participate in problem solving activities directed at resolving issues with products and/or processes in the aluminum sheet marketplace. Bring specialized skills to such inquiries including metallographic, statistical and customer process knowledge.
  • Support the development and improvement of product masters used to manufacture products out of Bay Minette.
  • Promptly and effectively respond to customer, commercial team, technical service team or internal teams enquires on the sites' current product manufacturing / quality capabilities, product manufacturing histories or on issues potentially linked to Bay Minette produced metal.
  • Provide quality incident support at customer locations or the Bay Minette side.
  • Maintain and effectively communicate critical metrics and customer information within the Technical group and to a broader Bay Minette/Novelis audience.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or other related fields.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in relevant aluminum fabrication.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Able to resolve problems efficiently.
  • A demonstrated ability to perform basic metallographic assessments of defects.
  • Effectively use statistics and/or statistical process control.
  • A proven track record to effectively lead and manage projects involving multiple people at multiple locations with potentially multiple cultures involved.
  • Work remotely from their base location with minimal external direction.
  • A demonstrated high level of personal initiative.

Preferred qualifications

  • Strong metallurgical and/or aluminum background.

Novelis' newly announced Bay Minette facility will be located 35 miles northeast of Mobile AL and 45 miles west of Pensacola FL and is expected to create approximately 1000 high-paying advanced careers in modern manufacturing. This highly advanced rolling and recycling facility will be the first of its kind. It will primarily serve our customers in the beverage can and automotive markets.
