Product Development Engineer Intern information

What does a product development engineer intern do?

A Product Development Engineer Intern works alongside engineering teams to help design, prototype, and test new products or improvements to existing products. Their responsibilities may include conducting research, preparing technical documentation, assisting with product testing, and collaborating with cross-functional teams such as design, manufacturing, and marketing. This internship offers hands-on experience in the product development process and helps interns gain valuable skills in engineering, teamwork, and project management.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a product development engineer intern expect during their internship?

As a Product Development Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects that contribute to the design, prototyping, and testing of new products. Typical responsibilities include assisting with CAD modeling, creating and executing test plans, gathering and analyzing data, and supporting cross-functional teams such as manufacturing and quality assurance. Interns often have the opportunity to collaborate closely with experienced engineers, attend team meetings, and present findings, giving them practical exposure to the full product development lifecycle. This diverse experience not only builds technical skills but also enhances problem-solving and communication abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a product development engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Product Development Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, problem-solving skills, and often enrollment in or completion of a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, prototyping tools, and sometimes basic programming or data analysis platforms is typically expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help you collaborate effectively and learn quickly in a dynamic environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for contributing to innovative product solutions and supporting the development team’s success.

Job description

About the Opportunity

Are you an engineer who enjoys seeing your work move from concept to reality? We're looking for a Product Engineer to support product design, development, and continuous improvement efforts from initial concept through manufacturing release. In this role, you'll work closely with Production, Quality, Purchasing, and Sales to solve real-world engineering challenges, improve existing products, support new product development, and drive cost and quality improvements.

This is a highly visible role where your ideas matter. You'll have the opportunity to identify opportunities for improvement and see those changes implemented directly on the manufacturing floor. If you're looking for a position where you can make a measurable impact and work alongside a collaborative, family-oriented team, we'd love to hear from you.

What You'll Do:

• Design, create, and revise engineering drawings and 3D models using CAD software.

• Support new product development from concept through manufacturing release, including prototyping and testing.

• Collaborate with Production and Quality teams to troubleshoot manufacturing issues and resolve drawing discrepancies.

• Identify and implement product enhancements, quality improvements, and cost reduction initiatives.

• Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), engineering documentation, and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).

• Support prototype builds, testing activities, and product validation efforts.

• Provide technical support to Production, Purchasing, Sales, and customers.

• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and cross-functional engineering projects.

Qualifications:

Required

• 1-3 years of experience in product design, mechanical engineering, or manufacturing engineering.

• Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar platforms.

• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and manufacturing specifications.

• Understanding of manufacturing processes including fabrication, machining, welding, and assembly.

• Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.

• 3-5 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.

• Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma certification.

• Experience with BOM management, ECOs, product testing, and revision control.

Work Environment

This position is based in a clean, climate-controlled manufacturing facility and offers a unique blend of office-based engineering and hands-on manufacturing support. Time spent at a desk versus on the production floor will vary based on project needs and production priorities. One week may be focused primarily on CAD design, documentation, and project work, while the next may involve significant time on the manufacturing floor supporting builds, implementing improvements, and troubleshooting production challenges. No two weeks are exactly the same, making this an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys balancing technical design work with hands-on problem-solving and cross-functional collaboration.
