What is post production?

Post production refers to the stage in filmmaking, video production, or photography that occurs after the initial recording or shooting. It involves editing the footage, adding visual effects, sound design, color correction, and finalizing the project for distribution. The goal of post production is to polish and enhance the raw material into a finished product that meets the creative vision. This process is crucial for ensuring the quality and coherence of films, TV shows, commercials, and other media projects. Post production teams often include editors, sound engineers, and visual effects artists.

What is the difference between Post Production vs Video Editor?

AspectPost ProductionVideo Editor
Primary FocusOverall process of editing, visual effects, sound, and finalizing mediaEditing raw footage to create a cohesive video
Skills & CertificationsEditing software, color correction, sound design, sometimes VFX skillsProficiency in editing software like Adobe Premiere, Final Cut
Work EnvironmentPost-production studios, editing suites, film/TV productionEditing suites, freelance or in-house media teams
Industry UsageUsed across film, TV, advertising, and digital mediaPrimarily in film, TV, online content creation

Post Production encompasses the entire process of editing and finalizing media, including visual effects and sound, while Video Editor focuses specifically on editing raw footage into a finished video. Both roles require proficiency in editing software, but Post Production involves a broader set of skills and responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Post Production Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Post Production Specialist, you need expertise in video editing, sound design, color grading, and a solid understanding of storytelling, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, and Avid Media Composer is typically required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, time management, and effective communication skills help you excel in collaborating with directors and producers. These abilities are essential for delivering polished, high-quality content that meets both creative and technical standards within tight deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced in a Post Production role, and how can they be addressed?

In Post Production, professionals often encounter tight deadlines, frequent last-minute changes, and the need to coordinate with multiple departments such as editors, sound designers, and visual effects artists. Managing version control and ensuring all team members are working with the most recent assets can also be challenging. Strong organizational skills, clear communication, and familiarity with collaborative software are essential to streamline workflow and minimize errors. Building a proactive relationship with directors and producers helps anticipate potential issues and maintain a smooth post-production process.

Job description

POST-PRODUCTION BUILDER WANTED
Post-Production Automation Engineer
Build the systems that make our creative team superhuman.
Role: Post-Production Automation Engineer
Location: Los Angeles, CA (Remote-Friendly)
Compensation: $120,000-$160,000
Reports to: VP of Post-Production
About TubeScience
TubeScience is a data-driven creative studio producing performance advertising at massive scale - and we're growing fast. We're looking for a Post-Production Automation Engineer to be the most technically sophisticated person on our post team.
The Role
This is a builder role - for someone genuinely excited about where AI and automation are taking Post-Production. You'll own our automation and AI roadmap from day one, with the autonomy to identify problems and ship solutions without waiting to be asked. You are the product lead, the architect, and the builder - all in one.
What You'll Own
Automation & AI Engineering
Architect end-to-end automation across ingest, QC, editing, delivery, and archival
Deploy LLMs, generative video platforms, and intelligent metadata/tagging systems
Design agent-based workflows that eliminate manual effort
Evaluate emerging AI tooling and own build-vs-buy decisions
Systems Architecture & Integration
Own our Iconik MAM: custom actions, metadata schemas, transcoding, and API integrations
Build REST API and webhook integrations across post tools and third-party platforms
Develop automation pipelines in n8n, Make, or Zapier - or go custom in Python/JS
Design for resilience: logging, error handling, alerting, and monitoring
Scripting & Tool Development
Write production-grade Python and JS/Node.js scripts across Adobe Creative Suite
Build internal tools that give editors superpowers without exposing the complexity
Build and maintain Adobe CEP/UXP panels inside the tools editors already use
R&D & Proactive Improvement
Audit the post pipeline for bottlenecks before the team surfaces them
Prototype emerging tech - AI, ML, new codecs, cloud-native media workflows
Own the Post-Production tooling roadmap with minimal oversight
Collaboration & Documentation
Translate Post-Production creative needs into precise technical requirements
Align with core engineering on infrastructure, deployment, and architecture
Document every system thoroughly so the team can run it confidently
Serve as final escalation for complex technical issues the post team can't resolve
What We're Looking For
4-6+ years in post-production engineering or workflow automation - high-volume advertising or broadcast preferred
Strong Python and/or JavaScript/Node.js - clean, production-grade code
Proven REST API integration experience with solid edge-case handling
Expert-level Iconik MAM experience strongly preferred
Hands-on with LLMs, generative AI, and orchestration tools (n8n, Make, Zapier or equivalent)
Deep fluency in codecs, containers, color pipelines, and shared storage (e.g. LucidLink)
Adobe Creative Suite scripting experience - CEP/UXP panel dev a strong plus
Working knowledge of AWS or Google Cloud and cloud-native media workflows
Genuine passion for post-production and excitement about transforming it with technology
+ Bonus Points
Experience with AI video generation tools (Runway, Veo, Sora) in production
Background in high-volume performance advertising or broadcast
Multi-step agentic pipeline design or large-scale workflow orchestration
Open-source contributions in the media/post-production space
Experience with data pipelines or BI tooling connected to production metadata
โ€ข Benefits
Health, Vision & Dental coverage
Unlimited PTO
401(k) + Matching
โ™ฅ Life Insurance
Paid Sick Days
Paid Parental Leave
