What is a platform manager?

A Platform Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the development, maintenance, and optimization of a specific technology platform within an organization. They coordinate between technical teams, stakeholders, and users to ensure the platform meets business needs and operates reliably. Platform Managers may also be involved in strategic planning, vendor management, and implementing new features or integrations. Their role is crucial for ensuring platforms are scalable, secure, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform manager?

To thrive as a Platform Manager, you need expertise in platform architecture, project management, and a solid understanding of business operations, often supported by a relevant degree or industry certification. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), API integrations, and product management tools like JIRA is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help drive cross-functional collaboration and strategic decision-making. These skills ensure the platform's stability, scalability, and alignment with business goals, which are critical for organizational success.

How does a platform manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure platform reliability and scalability?

They facilitate regular communication between developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to identify potential bottlenecks, address incidents, and plan for future growth. By establishing clear processes for incident management, change control, and performance monitoring, Platform Managers help ensure that the platform remains reliable and scalable while meeting user needs. This collaborative approach not only strengthens the technical foundation but also fosters a culture of shared responsibility across departments.
