What is a platform manager?

A Platform Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the development, maintenance, and optimization of a specific technology platform within an organization. They coordinate between technical teams, stakeholders, and users to ensure the platform meets business needs and operates reliably. Platform Managers may also be involved in strategic planning, vendor management, and implementing new features or integrations. Their role is crucial for ensuring platforms are scalable, secure, and aligned with organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a platform manager?

To thrive as a Platform Manager, you need expertise in platform architecture, project management, and a solid understanding of business operations, often supported by a relevant degree or industry certification. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), API integrations, and product management tools like JIRA is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help drive cross-functional collaboration and strategic decision-making. These skills ensure the platform's stability, scalability, and alignment with business goals, which are critical for organizational success.

How does a platform manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure platform reliability and scalability?

A Platform Manager frequently works with engineering, product, and operations teams to align platform capabilities with business goals. They facilitate regular communication between developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to identify potential bottlenecks, address incidents, and plan for future growth. By establishing clear processes for incident management, change control, and performance monitoring, Platform Managers help ensure that the platform remains reliable and scalable while meeting user needs. This collaborative approach not only strengthens the technical foundation but also fosters a culture of shared responsibility across departments.

Web Platform Manager

IDEX

Cedar Falls, IA

Job description

If you're looking for a special place to build or grow your career, you've found it. Whether you're an experienced professional, a recent college graduate or somewhere in between, IDEX is a place where you can apply your existing skills and learn new ones in an environment where you can make an impact.

With interesting opportunities in engineering, marketing, sales, supply chain, operations, HR, finance, and more across more than 40 diverse businesses around the globe, chances are, we have something special for you.

Primary Function:

Viking Pump's customer-facing digital platforms - VikingPump.com, VikingConnect, SmartSite Plus, and Viking E-Comm - are how customers, distributors, and channel partners experience us every day. The Web Platform Manager owns making these platforms run. This individual is the operating role behind Viking's digital strategy. You will keep the platforms stable and modern, run a predictable delivery cadence, manage the vendors and integrations that make them work, and continuously improve the user experience. You partner closely with Severe Duty Flow Control (SDFC) Digital on architecture, standards, and platform governance. Viking owns the commercial outcome; SDFC enables the scale and reuse.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Platform Operations
  • Own day-to-day operations of VikingConnect, SmartSite Plus, Viking E-Comm, and VikingPump.com - uptime, stability, and performance.

  • Monitor platform health; lead incident response; ensure root-cause analysis and follow-through on corrective actions.

  • Maintain release discipline - predictable cadence, clear change control, documented rollback paths.

  • Keep performance metrics (page load, error rates, conversion) visible to stakeholders and trending in the right direction.

Roadmap & Delivery
  • Be the primary point of contact for internal teams requesting tool updates, bug fixes, enhancements, or new functionality.

  • Run the intake and prioritization process - backlog is visible, decisions are explainable, no "black hole" requests.

  • Validate new features, conduct QA testing, and ensure changes meet usability and performance standards before they ship.

  • Evaluate user experience across tools and ship measurable improvements to navigation, workflows, content structure, accessibility, and interface design.

Integrations
  • Own the operational health of integrations between platform tools and the rest of the stack - CRM, PIM, JDEdwards (JDE), Brandfolder, analytics tools, authentication systems.

  • Partner with IT and SDFC Digital on architecture decisions, integration standards, and roadmap items.

  • Troubleshoot complex cross-system issues; ensure data flows are observable, monitored, and recoverable.

  • Support channel-partner API integrations that protect distributor relationships while improving speed and accuracy.

Vendor Management
  • Coordinate and manage relationships with onshore and offshore external developers and solutions partners.

  • Maintain active SOWs; review vendor performance on a defined cadence.

  • Manage cost-to-deliver - track effort, throughput, and quality so investment is defensible and adjustable.

  • Hold vendors accountable to standards set by SDFC Digital (architecture, UX, QA, release).

Documentation & Governance
  • Maintain documentation of platform processes, standards, runbooks, and support resources.

  • Make sure new team members and new vendors can self-onboard from the documentation.

  • Align day-to-day initiatives with broader Marketing, Sales, and Channel priorities.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience required.

  • 3-5+ years in digital platform management, web operations, or a related field.

  • Hands-on experience operating customer-facing web platforms in a B2B environment - uptime ownership, release cadence, incident response.

  • Experience managing onshore and offshore development vendors and solutions partners.

  • Working knowledge of integrations across CRM, PIM, ERP (JDE preferred), analytics, and authentication systems.

  • Comfort working in agile or structured project-management environments (Jira, Azure DevOps, or equivalent).

  • Experience with SAP-based platform tools (e.g., VikingConnect, SmartSite Plus) is ideal but not required.

Other Special Requirements:

  • Certain positions with IDEX Corporation and its business units require access to controlled goods and technologies subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations or the Export Administration Regulations. Applicants for these positions may need to be "U.S. Persons," as defined in these regulations. Generally, a "U.S. Person" is a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, lawful permanent resident, or an individual who has been granted refugee or asylum status.

  • Operationally rigorous - you instrument what matters and you know your numbers.

  • Strong cross-functional communicator - credible with Marketing, Sales, Channel Support, IT, and external vendors.

  • Disciplined documenter - you treat documentation as part of the work, not an afterthought.

  • Pragmatic problem solver - you can triage a complex cross-system issue without losing the room.

  • Customer-focused - you make decisions through the lens of the people using the platform.

  • Comfortable holding vendors accountable while keeping the relationship productive.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word) and Microsoft Dynamics.

  • Working knowledge of Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar work-management tools.

  • Solid grasp of APIs and system integrations.

  • Exposure to JD Edwards (JDE) and SAP-based platforms is ideal.
