Planner Manager information

What does a planner manager do?

A Planner Manager is responsible for overseeing the planning and coordination of projects, resources, or supply chains within an organization. They create strategies, manage schedules, and ensure that all planning processes align with company objectives and deadlines. Planner Managers often supervise a team of planners, analyze data to improve efficiency, and work closely with other departments to resolve issues. Their goal is to optimize operations, minimize delays, and support successful project or production outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a planner manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Planner Manager, you need strong analytical abilities, project management expertise, and typically a degree in urban planning, business, or a related field. Familiarity with planning software (such as MS Project or Primavera), GIS systems, and sometimes certification like AICP is important. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help you coordinate teams and manage stakeholder expectations effectively. These skills ensure efficient project delivery, strategic resource allocation, and alignment with organizational or municipal objectives.

What are some common challenges a planner manager faces when coordinating between multiple departments?

Planner Managers often encounter the challenge of aligning priorities and timelines across various departments, such as operations, procurement, and logistics. Balancing the needs and expectations of different stakeholders while ensuring project deadlines are met requires strong communication and negotiation skills. If you're passionate about innovation, care deeply about what people eat, and want to help build the future of food, we'd love to meet you.
The Role
The Demand Planning Data Analyst supports the Demand Planner Manager in operating the forecasting engine that drives FreshDirect's inventory planning and procurement processes. This role is responsible for creating accurate product forecasts based on anticipated customer demand, analyzing performance metrics, and ensuring optimal in-stock levels and service standards. Key responsibilities include managing weekly forecasting processes and collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance forecast accuracy. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills to convey technical concepts to non-technical colleagues, along with a commitment to continuous learning and process improvement.
What You'll Do
  • Responsible for the creation, maintenance, and updating of demand forecasts by Base-Material-Plant-Day for the next 150 days (in base units), using the company's demand-planning platform alongside other tools.
  • Execute and refine the weekly forecasting process, continuously seeking opportunities for improvement.
  • Analyze and interpret complex datasets from multiple sources to inform decision-making.
  • Apply statistical forecasting models to produce data-driven predictions.
  • Achieve consensus for forecasts by collaborating with merchandising, purchasing, marketing and Supply Chain, Production, Operations, etc.
  • Partner with the Demand Planner Manager to account for promotional impacts in forecasts.
  • Track and report on forecast accuracy and related KPIs - including service levels, promotion impact, scrap, out-of-stock, and days on hand - to drive continuous improvement.
  • Own root-cause analysis on forecast misses and lead weekly or biweekly consensus meetings with merchant partners to drive continuous improvement in forecast accuracy.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on sales or forecast-related projects as needed.
  • Communicate forecast trends and their alignment with business changes to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Manipulate and manage data sets with good governance.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Analytics, Supply Chain Management, Data Analytics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 1-4 years of experience in demand planning, forecasting, or analytics roles at least.
  • Fast learner with strong analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to evaluate large data sets and turn findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with visualization tools required.
  • Working knowledge of SQL or Python for data extraction and reporting required.
  • Experience with RELEX, Blue Yonder, o9, or similar demand planning platforms preferred.
  • Experience with SAP or similar ERP systems preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify trends and root causes in complex datasets
  • Ability to translate data insights into actionable recommendations
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build consensus across merchandising, purchasing, and supply chain stakeholders
  • Clear communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and a sense of ownership over forecast outcomes
  • Comfortable operating with ambiguity and making forecast calls under time pressure
  • Self-directed, with a track record of proactively identifying forecast risks before they affect service levels
