What are the typical challenges faced when working at a pharma startup, and how can new team members best adapt?

Working at a pharma startup often means operating in a fast-paced and rapidly evolving environment, with shifting priorities and limited resources. Team members may frequently wear multiple hats, contributing to research, regulatory documentation, and even business development. Adapting quickly, being flexible, and proactively communicating with colleagues are crucial for success. Embracing a collaborative mindset and staying open to learning new skills will help new hires navigate these unique challenges and thrive in the dynamic startup culture.

What is a pharma startup?

A pharma startup is a newly established company focused on the development, manufacturing, or commercialization of pharmaceutical products, such as drugs, biologics, or medical devices. These startups often work on innovative therapies, drug discovery, or novel approaches to healthcare challenges. Pharma startups play a crucial role in bringing new treatments to market and often collaborate with larger pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, or investors to advance their products. They typically face unique challenges, such as regulatory approval, funding, and clinical trials, but also drive significant innovation in the healthcare industry.

What are jobs at a pharma startup?

Jobs at a pharma startup include positions in research, development, and sales for pharmaceutical and prescription drugs. In these roles, you may help educate potential clients about your products, research ways to make your drugs more effective, or help them get through the rigorous scrutiny necessary for most medications. Pharma startups often focus on one or two products—developing new medicine can be extremely expensive, so companies usually want to have a successful, money-earning product before expanding out into other areas. Many employees during the startup phase work long hours to help make the company more successful, so expect frequent overtime in most positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a pharma startup?

To thrive in a pharma startup, you need a solid background in pharmaceutical sciences, drug development, or related fields, often supported by relevant degrees or industry experience. Familiarity with regulatory frameworks (FDA, EMA), clinical trial management systems, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving, entrepreneurial mindset, and effective communication are vital soft skills for navigating the dynamic startup environment. These skills and qualities enable rapid innovation, regulatory compliance, and successful teamwork essential for scaling a pharma startup.

Job description

The Role: Scale the Nucleus

We have the foundation-anchor logos and proven use cases are already in place. Now, we need the leader to build the rest. This isn't a "cold start" role. It's an invitation for a mid-to-late career operator to act as the "CEO" of our Pharma business unit-trading corporate bureaucracy for the autonomy to scale a proven product-market fit. You will own the vertical strategy and high-level relationships, reporting directly to the COO.

What You'll Do
  • Grow the Vertical: Leverage our existing anchor accounts to land the next wave of major logos. You know how to turn a successful pilot into a multi-million dollar rollout.
  • Build the Playbook: Create a repeatable sales and operations motion for Pharma. You're building the machine that we will eventually scale a dedicated team around.
  • Industry Voice: Act as the bridge between our customers and our product team. You'll ensure our AI is built to handle the specific compliance and operational hurdles unique to Pharma.
  • Own the Outcomes: From strategy to execution, you are the person responsible for the success of this vertical.
What You'll Need
  • 8-12+ Years in Pharma: You have deep roots in the industry (Commercial Ops, Supply Chain, or Digital Transformation) and know how these companies actually move.
  • A "Scaler" Mindset: You've taken a successful concept and made it bigger before. You're comfortable moving fast and building systems as you go.
  • Executive Presence: You can walk into a C-suite and command the room. You speak the language of the industry fluently.
  • AI-Native Thinking: You recognize that autonomous agents are the future of the physical economy and you want to lead that shift.
Why InstaLILY?
  • Real Traction: You aren't starting from zero. The product works and the customers are already live.
  • True Sovereignty: This is your business unit. You have the autonomy of a founder with the institutional backing of a top-tier AI startup.
  • High-Execution Culture: We're a sharp, low-ego team that prioritizes doing the work over talking about it.
  • Direct Impact: You'll work alongside the CEO and COO to shape the future of the company.
Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary Range: $150,000 - $250,000 per year, commensurate with experience
  • Equity: Generous stock options awards and refreshers for top performers
  • Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K, in-office Lunch reimbursement, Wellness Stipend, generous Parental leave, PTO and 10 US Federal Holidays, and more!
