Medical Assistant III/Transcriptionist

UnityPoint Health – Allen Lab

Shift: Full-time; 4 AM – 1230 PM, 6 AM – 230 PM

The Medical Assistant III-Pathology Secretary/Transcriptionist is responsible for transcribing all surgical reports and autopsy reports from the Pathologists, assisting outpatients and clients, answering phones, computer order entry and registration, filing, specimen receiving, typing, faxing , copying and keeping the office space in lab and/or Pathology organized.    The Med III staff work under the direction of the Pathologists and Lab Management.

  • Transcribes and types all Pathology surgical, autopsy and miscellaneous reports
  • Answers phone and provides customer service for pathology and/or main lab offices
  • Sends copies of reports to providers and clients
  • Orders and registers laboratory specimens
  • Reviews lab orders for accuracy
  • Maintains records of slides/blocks sent for consultation
  • Other clerical duties as assigned
  • Maintains schedules of frozen sections and notifies pathologists of scheduled cases
  • Packages and sends specimen blocks and slides for consultation
  • Reviews incoming specimens for order accuracy

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Courses or degree in medical assisting or medical transcription preferred

Licensure/Certification:

  • Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Experience:

  • 6-12 months experience medical secretary experience
  • Previous medical transcription preferred

Other:

  • Must be able to read, write and speak English
  • Must possess skilled computer basis and knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email and web browser
