Summary:

The part-time Library Assistant provides high-quality customer service and operational support to library users. Assignments may vary based on operational needs and do include evening and weekend coverage as required. This position assists users with locating materials, accessing library services, and supporting general circulation and operational workflows. The Library Assistant also provides basic technology support for printing, scanning, and troubleshooting technical issues in person, by phone, and via online communication tools.

Job Description:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide polite, high-quality customer service to library users, offering timely support for library and basic IT needs within established institutional practices.
  • Assist patrons with locating materials, using the online catalog and databases, and accessing general library services in person, via phone, email, and chat.
  • Educate users on library services, resources, and basic policies.
  • Support circulation workflows, including checkouts, holds, reserves, overdue materials, and item retrieval using the library system.
  • Assist with interlibrary loan (ILL) processing, coordination, and retrieval of materials.
  • Support shelving accuracy, stacks organization, inventory activities, and general collections maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot basic issues with printers, scanners, copiers, and public-facing computers.
  • Provide basic (Tier 1) technology support, including operating system issues, password resets, email access issues, and wireless connectivity problems.
  • Refer advanced research or technical issues to librarians or appropriate staff.
  • Provide guidance and basic supervision to student employees during assigned shifts.
  • Report and escalate operational, service, or technical issues through appropriate channels in a timely manner.
  • Support ongoing library workflows, projects, and operational continuity as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a service-oriented environment
  • Ability to work independently within established procedures and after initial training
  • Comfort working with technology and learning new systems
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to follow policies and clearly communicate procedures to library users and student employees
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during assigned shifts
  • Ability to lift and carry library materials up to approximately 25 pounds
  • Ability to move throughout the library to reach, bend, and retrieve materials from shelving units including between floors

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher required
  • Experience in a front-line, public-facing customer service role, preferably in a library or academic environment
  • Basic familiarity with PC and Mac operating systems and common office technologies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort providing assistance in person and via online chat or digital service platforms

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a library or academic environment, including providing reference or research assistance in a library setting
  • Experience troubleshooting computer systems, software, and peripheral devices
  • Experience supporting or training employees or team members in a professional or service-oriented environment
