Job description

Under general direction of the Library Director, the evening library assistant supports the after school operation of the library by helping to maintain a quiet and orderly space devoted to academic research and study, assisting students with their research needs, and helping with shelving and other daily library tasks as needed. The regular hours for this position are 2:00-6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the circulation desk and assist with daily tasks of the library such checking out library materials, receiving returns, and determining outstanding materials.
  • Maintain a quiet and orderly space for academic pursuits.
  • Locate books or other reference materials to assist patrons.
  • Assist and educate patrons on the use of electronic resources including databases, ebooks, and the catalog.
  • Supervise the after school work-grant students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Make sure the library is securely closed at the end of the day.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Dewey decimal or other library classification system.
  • Experience working with research databases and electronic resources.
  • Experience and comfort working with teenage boys in an academic setting.
  • A good steward of library resources and committed to sustainability in keeping with our designation as a Green Ribbon School.
  • Ability to remain professional and courteous while interacting with library patrons.
Education and Experience:
  • B.A. required. Previous teaching or library experience preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to climb ladders or step stools, push and pull book carts, and lift and carry books.
