What is a part time board member?

Part time board members are individuals who serve on an organization's board of directors without committing to a full-time schedule. They typically attend scheduled board meetings, provide strategic guidance, and oversee the organization's management and operations. Their role is to help set policies, ensure good governance, and offer expertise, but they are not involved in the daily management of the organization. Part time board members often serve on a voluntary or compensated basis, depending on the organization.

What are the typical expectations for time commitment and participation for a part time board member?

As a part time board member, you are generally expected to attend regular board meetings, which may occur monthly or quarterly depending on the organization. In addition to meetings, you may spend time reviewing materials, participating in committee work, and providing strategic guidance via email or phone calls. While the time commitment is less than a full-time executive role, you should be prepared for periods of increased activity around key decisions or events. Active participation and thoughtful input are highly valued, and your ability to collaborate with other board members and the executive team is essential for effective governance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time board member, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Board Member, you generally need executive experience, industry knowledge, and a strong understanding of governance or fiduciary responsibilities. Familiarity with board management platforms, financial reporting systems, and sometimes completion of governance training or certifications (such as from the Institute of Directors) are typically valued. Strategic thinking, sound judgment, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These competencies are critical to providing oversight, guiding organizational direction, and ensuring accountability while balancing limited time commitments.
