Located in the heart of Brooklyn’s Caribbean community, CWHA’S Immigration Legal Services Program offers high-quality immigration legal services aimed at protecting New York City residents and reuniting immigrants with their families.

Our attorneys provide representation to community members on a variety of affirmative immigration services including family-based visa petitions, Adjustment of Status applications, DACA, TPS, Naturalization, green card renewals, Removal of Conditions for Certain Lawful Permanent Residents, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) and other forms of relief.

CWHA has an exciting opportunity for a FULL-TIME EXPERIENCED IMMIGRATION STAFF ATTORNEY, who is passionate, and mission-driven, to provide immigration legal services to immigrants onsite from our Flatbush-based office. This is an immediate hire position. The Experienced Immigration Staff Attorney must have expertise in both affirmative immigration processes and removal proceedings to provide comprehensive legal services to immigrant clients. This position involves both one-on-one consultations and direct representation before immigration courts and agencies, such as USCIS, AAO, EOIR, and BIA.

Full Job Description:

Reports to: Director, Immigration Legal Services

Roles and Responsibilities include the following:

Client Representation and Direct Service

· Provide legal representation and advocacy to residents of the five boroughs of New York City in their immigration matters including legal intake and screening, advice and counsel, brief services, and full legal representation.

· Prepare, review, and file family-based and humanitarian immigration matters, including consular processing and USCIS petitions from intake through completion, such as VAWA (I-360), T Visas, U Visas, Asylum (I-589), I-485, I-130, N-400, N600, I-751, I-601, I-131, and related forms.

· Provide direct representation to clients before USCIS interviews where appropriate.

· Provide direct representation and support on a limited docket of removal cases and appearances at ICE check-in appointments.

Participation in Rapid Response Networks:

· Participate in coalition-based rapid response network for individuals for individuals in need by conducting consultations and attend committee meetings as needed.

Additional Duties

· Oversee and ensure compliance with all city and state grant reporting requirements. Track and report comprehensive data metrics and outcomes regarding both the clients represented and the services provided under each respective grant including monthly and quarterly reports.

· Communicate regularly with the Director for Immigration Legal Services and the Senior Staff Attorney to ensure delivery of a high quality of legal services to our clients and to ensure casework is timely completed.

· Attend regular meetings with Immigration Department Staff to discuss unit updates, training opportunities, case issues, or other relevant information.

· Represent CWHA at liaison and community partner meetings.

· Prepare and present Know Your Rights and Family Preparedness presentations.

· Maintain awareness of current trends and development in the immigration legal field.

· Support our growing team of paralegals and community navigators.

· Additional tasks may be assigned.

Qualifications, Education and experience required:

· Juris Doctor (JD)

· Admitted to the Bar in the State of New York.

· At least 1-3 years of post-JD experience in immigration law representing clients in affirmative relief applications to USCIS and in removal defense, preferably in a nonprofit or community-based setting.

· Ability to effectively communicate, collaborate, and connect with people from diverse backgrounds.

· Proficiency in oral and written Spanish or Haitian Creole is a plus.

Skills and/or competencies preferred:

· Demonstrated commitment to social justice and commitment to working with immigrants, low-income clients and communities of color to advance equity;

· Excellent writing, research, analytical, and communication skills.

· Demonstrated ability to think strategically, advocate effectively and proactively resolve issues or problems.

· Adept at managing competing priorities.

·Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, planning and time management skills.

· Strong respect for accuracy and meeting deadlines.

Salary: $80,000.00*

*As this position is funded through a city contract, starting salaries are set in advance according to the terms of the contract and are non-negotiable. CWHA is committed to transparency and equity in compensation. Salary ranges are determined based on a structured compensation plan that is regularly reviewed and updated based on market research and available funding.
