Legal Department
Non-Exempt
JOB DESCRIPTION
This position provides legal support to the Legal Department in handling a wide range of legal and executive support-related tasks and will be able to work independently with little or no supervision. This person must be exceedingly well organized, flexible and enjoy the challenges of supporting a department of diverse people and tasks. The candidate must be able to interact with staff at all levels in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and efficient, with a high level of professionalism.
This position reports directly to the General Counsel.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Provide high-level legal support by conducting extensive and detailed legal research, drafting memos, summaries, and opinions on in-house legal matters, and handling information requests
  • Liaison with departmental staff, vendors, and others on behalf of the legal department
  • Participation in meetings with staff on behalf of the legal department
  • Review, drafting, editing, and/ or proofreading of contracts and related documents spanning intellectual property, entertainment law, insurance, vendor and software agreements, employment law, risk and compliance, privacy and security, PCI, Ministry and waivers and releases of liability
  • Drafting policies, letters, memos, board minutes and other correspondence as directed
  • Responsible for heavy calendar management; requiring interaction with both internal and external executives, staff leadership, administration, executive assistants, and consultants, to coordinate/schedule/facilitate legal meetings, various staff meetings, trainings and community sponsored events
  • Facilitate conference calls, in-person meetings and other logistics necessary for the Legal Department
  • Process expense reports and reimbursement requests on behalf of the Legal Department
  • Organize and facilitate quarterly legal internship program
  • Create and update status timelines relating to various claims and lawsuits
  • Report fraudulent activity occurring on various social media outlets
  • Receipt, review and filing of monthly financial budgetary reports
  • Conduct renewal of various music/video licenses for use and publishing
  • Manage copyrighted musical works and assist with overall music management for the Church
  • Assist with the insurance renewal process and manage claims
  • Assist with monitoring of various operational risks with a focus on the areas of financial, information technology, insurance, safety and security, child safety and other areas as needed
  • Assist with the organization's compliance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Managing the Onit and DocuSign contract systems
  • Assist with case status assessment management, respond to discovery, and records management
  • Assist with Provide training on legal specific topics as may be needed
  • Facilitate and maintain new and reoccurring ministerial ordination/licensing
  • Assist in the administration of the Copyright Department: monitor, respond and maintain copyright email regarding use of various copyrighted material
  • Managing the Copyright and Legal department emails and responding to requests
  • Assist with Trademark and Copyright filings, drafting of such documents and notices for filing
  • Maintain the church's assumed name certificates, and others
  • Assist in the removal of fake social media sites, websites and other infringing material as directed
  • Maintain and update various departmental-specific spreadsheets and timelines
  • Complete and submit annual insurance renewal applications
  • Assist in the administration of the international offices; help facilitate the flow of communication between Lakewood Church and its international offices
  • Maintenance and renewal of Sales Tax and Use certificates for select states
  • Perform all general office duties and special projects as assigned, and other related duties as assigned

MINISTERIAL DUTIES

This will also include:
  • Regular attendance at Church services and classes,
  • Serving as a Prayer Partner or as a volunteer in any ministry of the Church, and
  • Serving our community through local outreaches from time to time when needed by the Church

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Uncompromised commitment to Lakewood Church's vision, mission, values, and core beliefs
  • High degree of motivation, attention to detail and flexibility
  • Handle sensitive, confidential information and assignments with tact, discretion and diplomacy
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships
  • Work under pressure and time constraints and handle changing priorities
  • Willingness to work extended hours when necessary, and on call as needed
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Pro-active, self-starter with minimal need for oversight
  • Excellent skills in management of electronic files and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to conduct research via internet and legal platforms (Bloomberg, Practical Law, etc.)
  • Possess good listening skills, with the ability to defuse and appropriately handle or direct calls
  • Ability to think clearly, critically and analyze problems and take effective action in communicating the proper department leader in a timely manner

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Paralegal Certification or equivalent work experience
  • Some college preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of directly related experience preferred
