Job description

The K-8 Music Teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering engaging music instruction that fosters students' musical knowledge, performance skills, creativity, cultural appreciation, and lifelong enjoyment of music. The teacher creates a positive learning environment that supports academic achievement, artistic expression, and the social-emotional development of all students while aligning instruction with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Music Education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Curriculum

  • Plan and deliver standards-based music instruction for students in grades K-8.
  • Develop lessons aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and district curriculum expectations.
  • Teach music concepts including rhythm, melody, harmony, form, expression, music literacy, composition, and performance.
  • Integrate singing, instrumental performance, movement, technology, and creative expression into instruction.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners, including students with disabilities, English learners, and academically gifted students.
  • Incorporate culturally responsive teaching practices and expose students to a variety of musical genres and traditions.

Student Learning and Assessment

  • Assess student progress through formal and informal measures.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and achievement.
  • Use assessment data to inform instructional decisions and improve student outcomes.
  • Provide timely feedback to students and families regarding academic progress.

Classroom Environment

  • Establish and maintain a safe, orderly, and engaging learning environment.
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies that maximize instructional time.
  • Promote student responsibility, collaboration, creativity, and respect.

Performance and Program Development

  • Organize and direct student performances, concerts, programs, and special events.
  • Prepare students for school and community performances as appropriate.
  • Manage music equipment, instruments, instructional materials, and performance resources.
  • Assist with the development and promotion of school-wide arts initiatives.

Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, administrators, specialists, and support staff to support student success.
  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), faculty meetings, professional development, and school improvement efforts.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Maintain compliance with district, state, and federal regulations and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of music education pedagogy and child development.
  • Ability to teach vocal and general music concepts to elementary and middle school students.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to integrate instructional technology into music instruction.

Minimum Qualifications
