THE OPPORTUNITY

This Senior Manager, Mobile Engineering position works onsite in our Alameda, CA location for Lingo.

As Senior Manager of Mobile Engineering at Lingo, you will lead a high-performing team of iOS and Android engineers responsible for delivering seamless, consumer-facing mobile experiences that bring our biosensing platform to life. This is a hands-on leadership role where you will actively contribute to the codebase, conduct thoughtful code reviews, and set the technical direction while also owning team performance, processes, and delivery outcomes.

You are a player-coach who builds trust through technical credibility and leads by example. You know how to cultivate a strong engineering culture-providing timely, actionable feedback, mentoring engineers at different levels, and stepping in to solve complex challenges when needed. You thrive in a fast-paced, consumer health environment, where the products you ship directly impact how people understand and manage their health-and where both quality and speed to market are critical.

This role is primarily focused on native mobile development (iOS and Android), driving best practices in performance, scalability, and user experience. Experience with React Native is a plus, but not required.

What You'll Work On

  • Manage, mentor, and grow a global team of iOS and Android engineers conducting regular 1:1s, setting clear expectations, and providing honest, constructive feedback that accelerates individual development.
  • Own hiring for your team: define the roles you need, partner with recruiting, and make strong hiring decisions that raise the bar.
  • Manage team capacity, workload balance, and resourcing across concurrent initiatives.
  • Contribute meaningfully to the codebase by writing, reviewing, and debugging code across iOS and Android as a regular part of your work, not just in emergencies.
  • Lead architecture and design reviews for major mobile features, ensuring decisions are well reasoned, documented, and understood by the team.
  • Support and guide the team's ongoing transition from React Native to fully native iOS and Android applications, including defining migration strategies and best practices.
  • Set and enforce engineering standards across mobile development including code quality, testing practices, performance benchmarks, and release readiness.
  • Collaborate with Data Science, Backend, and Platform Engineering teams to ensure mobile experiences are well-integrated with Lingo's biosensor data and AI/ML capabilities.
  • Represent mobile engineering in product and technical planning discussions, influencing roadmap decisions with a grounded understanding of technical trade-offs.
  • Partner with the Quality Engineering team to define mobile testing standards and ensure releases meet Lingo's quality bar in a regulated consumer health environment.
  • Partner closely with Product and Design to translate user needs and business requirements into well-scoped, high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Drive planning, estimation, and execution of mobile initiatives from discovery through production release.
  • Identify and proactively surface delivery risks, technical debt, and dependencies that could affect team output or product quality.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in software engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with strong hands-on expertise in native iOS (Swift) and/or Android (Kotlin) development.
  • 3+ years of engineering management experience, including direct line management of software engineers (hiring, performance management, and career development).
  • Experience leading native mobile development in a consumer-facing product, ideally one where performance, reliability, and user experience are critical differentiators.
  • Solid understanding of mobile architecture patterns, performance optimization, and platform-specific best practices for iOS and Android.
  • Experience with React Native and cross-platform to native migration strategies.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, able to work effectively with Product, Design, and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Ability to balance hands-on technical work with the people and process responsibilities of engineering management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in consumer health, digital health, or other regulated industries where software quality has direct user safety implications.
  • Familiarity with CGM, biosensor, or IoT data integration in mobile applications.
  • Exposure to AI or data-driven consumer features, such as personalized insights, recommendation systems, or on-device ML.
  • Prior experience at a high-growth consumer technology company or startup environment.
