What is mobile engineering?

Mobile engineering is the field focused on designing, developing, and maintaining software applications for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Mobile engineers create apps for operating systems like iOS and Android, ensuring they are user-friendly, efficient, and secure. The role involves working with programming languages, development frameworks, and often collaborating with designers and product managers to deliver high-quality mobile experiences. Mobile engineers also stay updated on new technologies and trends to keep their apps current and competitive.

How do mobile engineers typically collaborate with designers and product managers during the app development lifecycle?

Mobile engineers work closely with designers and product managers to ensure that the final product aligns with user expectations and business goals. During development, engineers often participate in regular meetings to review wireframes, discuss technical feasibility, and provide feedback on user experience. Effective collaboration involves clear communication about timelines, technical constraints, and iterative testing, which helps address potential issues early and ensures a smooth workflow. This team-based approach not only streamlines development but also fosters a shared sense of ownership over the app's success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mobile Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mobile Engineer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages like Swift, Kotlin, or Java, combined with a solid understanding of mobile development frameworks and a relevant degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Xcode, Android Studio, version control systems (e.g., Git), and experience with APIs and testing frameworks is typically required. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and deliver high-quality apps. These skills ensure the creation of robust, user-friendly mobile applications that meet business requirements and industry standards.

What is mobile engineering salary?

The salary for a mobile engineer typically ranges from $70,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and skill level. Senior roles with expertise in iOS or Android development, along with knowledge of programming languages like Swift or Kotlin, tend to earn higher salaries.

Job description

Lead and build Gallup's mobile future while delivering production-grade apps at scale and staying hands-on in the craft.

As a mobile engineering manager at Gallup, you will lead the team responsible for Gallup's production-facing mobile apps, while setting the technical standard for the mobile systems that power them. You will shape architecture, accelerate delivery, drive measurable growth, and partner across product and design to ensure mobile delivers both feature parity and a true mobile-native advantage.

This is not a pure people-management role. You will stay close to the code; guide architecture decisions; and raise the bar for engineering excellence across iOS, Android and the backend services mobile depends on.

What You'll Do

  • Lead a team of mobile and full-stack engineers building Gallup's production-facing mobile apps and foundational services
  • Write code, review pull requests and drive architecture decisions across mobile clients and backend services
  • Set the technical bar for mobile including architecture, performance, release discipline, app stability and scalability
  • Own the iOS, Android and shared backend road map in partnership with product peers
  • Drive measurable growth outcomes including MAU, conversion, retention, performance and stability
  • Maintain feature parity while preserving a distinct mobile-native advantage across innovation initiatives and stable platforms like Access
  • Partner with design to make mobile-first product decisions
  • Use cross-team partnerships to accelerate delivery across identity, compliance and platform integrations
  • Hire, coach and grow engineers while managing performance and career development

What Makes You Stand Out

  • Hands-on technical depth: You bring strong mobile engineering expertise and remain actively engaged in architecture, implementation and code quality.
  • Mobile platform judgment: You understand how mobile fits into broader systems including backend services, identity, release management, app store dynamics and performance, and you design with that full ecosystem in mind.
  • Growth and performance impact: You have delivered measurable outcomes across MAU, conversion, retention, scale, performance and stability.
  • Enterprise and greenfield range: You have succeeded in both established enterprise environments and earlier-stage or greenfield builds and can navigate the trade-offs of each.
  • Cross-functional acceleration: You consistently use partnerships with product, design and platform teams to remove friction, increase clarity and speed up delivery.

What You Need

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience, required
  • At least 10 years of professional engineering experience required
  • At least three years managing engineering teams required
  • Direct experience leading mobile engineering teams across iOS, Android or both required
  • Hands-on experience writing production-grade mobile and backend code required
  • Strong understanding of client architecture, backend services, release management, app store dynamics, and mobile performance and stability required
  • Demonstrated impact on growth metrics such as MAU, conversion, retention or scale required
  • Experience thriving in both established enterprise systems and earlier-stage greenfield builds required
  • Demonstrated success hiring, developing and elevating engineering talent required
  • Experience with identity systems such as OAuth or SSO preferred
  • Experience with data residency and compliance work preferred
  • Experience with cross-platform mobile frameworks such as React Native or Flutter preferred
  • A commitment to working on-site at Gallup's San Francisco office at least three days per week required
