What is mobile engineering?

Mobile engineering is the field focused on designing, developing, and maintaining software applications for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Mobile engineers create apps for operating systems like iOS and Android, ensuring they are user-friendly, efficient, and secure. The role involves working with programming languages, development frameworks, and often collaborating with designers and product managers to deliver high-quality mobile experiences. Mobile engineers also stay updated on new technologies and trends to keep their apps current and competitive.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mobile engineer?

To thrive as a Mobile Engineer, you need strong proficiency in programming languages like Swift, Kotlin, or Java, combined with a solid understanding of mobile development frameworks and a relevant degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Xcode, Android Studio, version control systems (e.g., Git), and experience with APIs and testing frameworks is typically required. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and deliver high-quality apps. These skills ensure the creation of robust, user-friendly mobile applications that meet business requirements and industry standards.

How do mobile engineers typically collaborate with designers and product managers during the app development lifecycle?

Mobile engineers work closely with designers and product managers to ensure that the final product aligns with user expectations and business goals. During development, engineers often participate in regular meetings to review wireframes, discuss technical feasibility, and provide feedback on user experience. Effective collaboration involves clear communication about timelines, technical constraints, and iterative testing, which helps address potential issues early and ensures a smooth workflow. This team-based approach not only streamlines development but also fosters a shared sense of ownership over the app's success.

What does a mobile engineer do?

A mobile engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains mobile applications for platforms like iOS and Android. They use programming languages such as Swift, Kotlin, or Java and often collaborate with designers and product managers to create user-friendly apps. Job description

Overview
THE ROLE
Herbalife is rebuilding the way nearly five million independent distributors run their businesses - and mobile is where most of that experience lives. As Director of Mobile Engineering, you'll lead the native iOS and Android apps, cross-platform work, and modern web front-end for a platform that operates in 95+ markets and directly drives how distributors onboard customers, manage orders, and grow their businesses.
This isn't a greenfield pitch or a maintenance job. Herbalife is in the middle of a multi-year transformation - evolving beyond traditional commerce toward a personalized health and coaching experience that connects distributors to their customers in deeper, more data-driven ways. The mobile surface is where most of that strategy meets the customer. You'll own it end-to-end: architecture, release, performance, quality, and the team that delivers it.
You'll lead a globally distributed team across the U.S., India, and Mexico, set the front-end technical direction alongside Product, Architecture, and Security, and make the calls that resolve how fast we ship and how well the apps perform in the hands of distributors and their customers every day.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE THIS ROLE
• An unusual business model to build for. Our apps serve a B2B2C audience: independent distributors running real businesses, plus the end customers they serve. That's different product thinking than a typical consumer app - and more interesting engineering.
• Real scale, real reach. 95+ markets, multi-currency, multi-language, with compliance requirements baked into the architecture. If you want your work used by millions of people across dozens of countries, it is.
• A transformation with real momentum. The business is growing again, the platform foundation is in place, and the directive is to accelerate - not to start from scratch or hold the line.
• Genuine AI and personalization runway. Integrating biometric data, personalized nutrition, and AI-based mentoring into distributor-customer workflows - real product surface, not a buzzword deck.
• Real ownership. Architecture decisions, release strategy, team shape, hiring, vendor choices - yours to make.
HOW YOU WOULD CONTRIBUTE
• Lead Herbalife's global mobile engineering organization across native iOS and Android and cross-platform (Flutter / React Native) development.
• Own web front-end engineering: reusable components, UI frameworks, and adaptable builds across desktop and mobile web.
• Define and deliver the front-end engineering roadmap - balancing speed, scalability, accessibility, and user experience.
• Make the architecture and technology calls for mobile and web, weighing performance, cost, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
• Own the mobile app release process end-to-end: App Store and Play Store management, telemetry, crash monitoring, and lifecycle updates.
• Build and mature CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps practices, and agile delivery models for rapid, secure iteration.
• Measure and improve performance benchmarks - Core Web Vitals, crash rates, session analytics, and DORA metrics.
• Partner with Product and Design to translate customer needs into intuitive, responsive, accessible experiences.
• Drive integration with enterprise systems: headless CMS, analytics, personalization engines, and identity providers.
• Make build-vs-buy calls on GenAI and agentic capabilities - LLM assistants, autonomous agents for support and commerce, AI-generated content - and own how they land in the mobile and web experience.
• Ensure compliance with accessibility standards (WCAG), security protocols, and international laws (GDPR, CCPA).
• Set the bar for engineering culture - technical excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement across a distributed team.
THE TEAM
Mobile Engineering sits inside the broader Digital Technology organization, driving Herbalife's transformation into a modern commerce and engagement platform for distributors and their customers. The team ships across iOS, Android, and web to 95+ markets, works alongside Product, Design, Architecture, and Security, and operates across hubs in the U.S., India, and Mexico.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead and develop a globally distributed engineering team across the U.S., India, and Mexico.
• Drive coaching, career development, and technical mentorship for mobile and front-end engineers and their leaders.
• Set goals, manage performance, and guide execution at both the strategic and tactical levels.
Qualifications
SKILLS AND BACKGROUND REQUIRED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:
• 10+ years of technology experience, with at least 5 years leading mobile and/or front-end engineering teams in global B2C or B2B2C environments.
• Proven success in delivering customer-facing mobile and web applications at scale, including App Store/Play Store release management.
• Deep technical expertise in React, Flutter, Native iOS/Android, TypeScript, GraphQL, REST APIs, and modern front-end architectures.
• Proficient knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, DevSecOps principles, feature flagging, monitoring for system failures, and tools for system visibility.
• Experience integrating with enterprise services: CMS, personalization engines, analytics, and authentication providers.
• Proven experience in coordinating engineering teams across multiple regions, encouraging teamwork and maintaining high technical standards.
• Knowledge of UX principles, accessibility (WCAG), responsive design, and cross-platform consistency.
• Strong decision-making capabilities in build vs. buy evaluations and technology stack selection.
• Experience with trial technologies, tailored solutions, and API-first content management platforms (e.g., Contentful, Adobe AEM).
• Understanding of LLMs, prompt engineering, and agentic workflows, with ability to evaluate and integrate third-party AI platforms (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Vertex AI).
Education
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Master's degree or certification in digital product leadership, architecture, or technology strategy.
