How much do medical biller jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 30, 2026, the average hourly pay for medical biller in the United States is $20.52, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $17.55 and $22.60 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Which medical biller makes the most money?

Senior medical billers with extensive experience, specialized certifications, and advanced skills in billing software tend to earn the highest salaries in the field. Typically, those working in large healthcare organizations or in managerial roles also have higher earning potential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Medical Biller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Medical Biller, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, insurance processes, and billing procedures, often supported by a certificate or relevant associate degree. Familiarity with medical billing software (such as Kareo or AdvancedMD) and knowledge of coding systems like ICD-10 and CPT are typically required. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients and insurers are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate claims processing, timely reimbursements, and compliance with healthcare regulations.

What Do Medical Billers Do?

Medical billers process services provided to patients and submit claims to insurance companies. They follow up with the claim to ensure it is processed and paid in a timely manner. Any part of the services that are not covered by insurance is then billed to the patient. For certain medical procedures, medical billers also file insurance paperwork for pre-authorization to confirm insurance coverage for the procedure. Medical practices and healthcare facilities rely on medical billers to follow claims and reimbursements to bring in a steady stream of revenue.

Is it hard to get hired as a medical biller?

Getting hired as a medical biller generally depends on your relevant skills, such as knowledge of medical coding and billing software, and your experience. Entry-level positions are often available, but having certifications like CPC can improve your chances of employment. The job market can vary by location and demand for healthcare administrative staff.

What is the difference between Medical Biller vs Medical Coder?

AspectMedical BillerMedical Coder
CertificationsCertified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS), CPCCertified Professional Coder (CPC), CCS
Work EnvironmentHealthcare offices, billing companiesHospitals, clinics, billing departments
Primary ResponsibilitiesSubmitting claims, follow-up on paymentsAnalyzing medical records, assigning codes

Medical Billers and Medical Coders often work together but focus on different tasks. Medical Billers handle submitting claims and managing payments, while Medical Coders analyze medical records to assign appropriate codes. Both roles require similar certifications and are essential in healthcare revenue cycle management.

What skills do you need to be a medical biller?

Medical billers need strong attention to detail, knowledge of medical coding and billing procedures, and proficiency with billing software and electronic health records. Good communication skills and understanding of healthcare regulations are also important for accurate claim submission and reimbursement.

What are medical billers?

Medical billers are professionals responsible for processing and submitting insurance claims for healthcare providers. They ensure that patient information, treatments, and procedures are accurately recorded and billed to insurance companies or patients. Medical billers also follow up on unpaid claims, resolve billing issues, and help healthcare facilities receive proper reimbursement for their services. Their work is crucial for the financial health of medical practices and for ensuring patients are billed correctly.

Can I be a medical biller with no experience?

Medical billers can often start with little to no experience, as many employers provide on-the-job training. Having basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology can be helpful, and obtaining certification such as the Certified Professional Biller (CPB) can improve job prospects. Entry-level positions typically focus on learning billing software and insurance procedures.

What are some common challenges medical billers face when working with insurance companies?

Medical billers often encounter challenges such as denied or rejected claims, discrepancies in patient information, and frequent changes in insurance policies or coding requirements. Navigating these issues requires strong attention to detail, persistence in following up with insurance representatives, and staying updated on industry changes. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential for resolving disputes and ensuring timely reimbursement.
