Description
LAB INSTRUCTOR - MCA
SUMMARY
The lab instructor is responsible for instructing students in skills required to function as Medical Clinical Assistant , organizing the curriculum, overseeing lab management, tracking the progress of each student, and keeping accurate records/files on each student during lab sessions
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
  1. Training Students (On Campus Only)
    1. Develop lab activities and delivery methods, assignments and activities, and lab procedures for assigned classes designated by the corporate provided curriculum.
    2. Instruct and guide students in the lab learning environment as designated by the corporate provided curriculum.
    3. Demonstrate procedures/processes and operate appropriate equipment as designated by the curriculum. Procedures taught to students include but are not limited to blood pressures, vital signs, phlebotomy procedures, physicians office lab procedures, EKG, assisting with minor surgical procedures, etc.
    4. Grade and evaluate students' lab skills in a timely manner and provide constructive feedback.
    5. Tutor students with areas of the lab procedures with which they are having difficulty.
    6. Keep accurate and up to date skills checklists on students' work.
    7. Compile reports/updates on students as required.
    8. Provide telephone, email, or in-person follow-up with students as requested.
    9. Maintain a cooperative and professional learning environment.
  2. Professional Development
    1. Develop a professional development growth plan.
    2. Provide support documentation that the professional development plan has been executed.
    3. Attend scheduled faculty meetings and in-service workshops as requested.
    4. Provide feedback on curriculum and student evaluation as requested.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but collaborates with the academics' team to support student success.
WORK ENVIRONMENT and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position operates in a clinical classroom setting. The instructor may need to perform procedures or processes and operate or demonstrate the use of appropriate equipment as designated by the curriculum. Also, the position may require the use of standard office equipment, including but not limited to computers, phones, printers, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. The employee must be able to:
  • Sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Frequently use hands and fingers to operate office equipment
  • Occasionally reach, bend, or lift to move items such as but not limited to files, office supplies, or equipment.
  • Maintain visual acuity to read and prepare documents
  • Proficiency in keyboarding is required for daily functions.

TRAVEL
This position may require occasional travel to other campus locations, off-site work-related locations, such as but not limited to, externship sites or campus events.
POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
This is a part-time, hourly, on-site position. The scheduled workday(s) may vary to accommodate the needs of the school and its students. The typical lab classes are offered on Saturday. The hours are generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Work outside of these hours may occasionally be required due to unforeseen circumstances.
EDUCATION and PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE
An Associates Degree's degree (or higher) is preferred. At least three years of practical experience as a Medical Clinical Assistant or related field is required. Medical Assisting certification is preferred but not required.
Valley College will verify prior work experience and education background. A background check is required.
