What is a managing attorney?

A Managing Attorney is a senior lawyer who oversees the operations of a law firm or legal department. Their responsibilities typically include supervising other attorneys and staff, managing case assignments, ensuring compliance with legal regulations, and developing firm policies. They also often play a key role in business development, client relations, and financial management. The Managing Attorney ensures that legal services are delivered efficiently and ethically, while maintaining the quality and reputation of the practice.

What is the difference between Managing Attorney vs Associate Attorney?

AspectManaging AttorneyAssociate Attorney
CredentialsJurisdiction-specific law degree, bar admission, leadership experienceLaw degree, bar admission, entry to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentOversees legal team, manages cases, strategic planningHandles legal research, drafts documents, supports senior attorneys
Employer & Industry UsageLaw firms, corporate legal departments, government agenciesLaw firms, corporate legal departments, government agencies

The main difference between a Managing Attorney and an Associate Attorney lies in their responsibilities and experience. Managing Attorneys oversee legal teams and handle strategic management, while Associate Attorneys focus on casework and supporting senior staff. Both roles require a law degree and bar admission, but the Managing Attorney typically has more leadership experience and responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a managing attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Managing Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, extensive legal expertise, and experience in supervising legal teams. Familiarity with legal research databases, case management software, and compliance tools is typically required. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring legal accuracy, efficient workflow, and successful management of complex legal cases or departments.

What is a managing attorney?

A managing attorney is a partner at a law firm and oversees the daily operations of the business. As a managing attorney, your job duties include handling budgeting, scheduling, and hiring practices, as well as promoting relationships with clients and associates. At a smaller firm, you may also continue to maintain a caseload and handle trials and settlements. To pursue a career as a managing attorney, you typically need to complete law school, pass the state bar exam, and gain extensive legal experience as a practicing lawyer before you can move up to a management position. Additional qualifications include excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills, along with the ability to bring in clients and supervise employees.

What are some typical challenges a managing attorney faces when overseeing a legal team?

Managing Attorneys often encounter challenges such as balancing their own caseload with leadership responsibilities, ensuring effective communication among team members, and maintaining high standards of legal work under tight deadlines. They must also navigate differing personalities within the team, manage resource allocation, and handle conflicts or high-stress cases sensitively. Successfully addressing these challenges requires strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills, as well as a commitment to mentoring junior attorneys and fostering a collaborative work environment.

Compensation: Base salary plus PROFIT SHARE

  • $120,000 - $200,000 per year

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all Minnesota operations, from hiring and managing staff (with support from our HR department) to managing cases and clients.
  • Lead business development efforts, working closely with Firm Co-Founders to grow the Minnesota practice.
  • Ensure exceptional client service and case outcomes.
  • Monitor operations and identify growth opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of personal injury experience.
  • Licensed and in good standing with the Minnesota State Bar.
  • Proven success in handling personal injury cases and strong client advocacy.
  • Exceptional research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Strong leadership and management abilities, capable of fostering a high-performing team.
  • Tech-savvy with experience in legal research tools and software.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to cultivate lasting client relationships.
  • Motivated, ambitious, and committed to long-term success.

How to Apply: Interested candidates should submit:

  • A resume detailing relevant experience and educational background.
  • A cover letter outlining your interest in the position, your qualifications, and any ties to the Minnesota community.

Why Join Us?

  • Become a Managing Attorney without a buy-in or financial risk.
  • Work alongside dynamic and experienced founders with a vision to expand and innovate.
  • Shape the future of our Minnesota practice and contribute to the firm’s continued growth.
