Who we're looking for

PTT's Vision is to deliver a World Class Mobility Evaluation Service through On-Time Delivery of Objective Quality Results and Conclusions.

Reporting to the Manager, Lab Operations, the Maintenance Supervisor, Lab Operations is responsible for the maintenance of powertrain testing equipment in three Ann-Arbor facilities working multiple shifts.

These facilities are doing performance, durability and emissions testing (Chassis, Engine, Transmission) with Dynamometers, Emission analyzers, and other test systems in dedicated test cells. This role requires planning and scheduling of maintenance resources, ensuring quality and safety standards are upheld and that regulatory compliance is verified.

The primary Internal customers of the Manager, Lab Operations are the PTT managers scheduling and executing powertrain testing however this role also collaborates with TMC and external regulatory bodies, as well as internal Toyota groups with facilities responsibility.

This position will be located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

What you'll be doing:

To deliver Operational Excellence

Ownership of PTT Lab Ops core maintenance processes including:

  • Planned Maintenance -

    • Execution - Ensuring appropriate resource allocation, prioritization and timely execution of all preventative maintenance.

    • Preparation - Ensuring that technicians are trained and appropriate tools are used such that standard process adherence is achieved.

    • Specification - Ensuring preventative maintenance processes, standards and schedules exist for all PTT-owned test equipment and facilities.

  • Unplanned Maintenance/Problem Resolution -

    • Real-time prioritization, timely resolution and transparent communication of equipment and facility issues that may potentially delay planned testing.

  • Compliance Verification - Ensuring timely verification, documentation and reporting of equipment compliance in accordance with regulatory requirements (e.g. CFR's ) and Toyota standards and compliance plans (e.g. fuel usage).

    • Supervision -

      • Direct supervision of Lab Ops maintenance technicians including recruiting, training, daily work allocation and resource management, skill development, performance management and career development.

      • Participation in the training, mentoring and supervision of occasional trainees, co-ops, college programs as a talent pipeline.

  • Spares and Consumables Planning - Ensuing adequate inventory of spares and consumables including calibration and test gases, machine spares and consumables for planned maintenance.

  • Safety -

    • Process/Standards - Ensuring compliance with all Toyota and local safety standards and processes including (risk assessment, JSA/JSA review, SWP generation, industrial equipment training, incident reporting etc.).

    • Audits - Facilitating and participating in safety process, equipment and training audits as part of the annual Toyota Safety Management Plan.

To deliver New Product Introduction

  • Continuous Improvement of Existing Maintenance Processes - including standards, KPI's, auditing, training in response to:

    • Regulation Changes: by internal authority (Safety R&D, Safety P.E., Security and Environmental) and by external authority (e.g. OSHA, ASTM, NEC, NFPA).

    • Product Changes incl. Li-Ion Battery, PT Div. ERP for BEV, New Battery Lab, H2 .

  • Development of Maintenance Processes for New Facilities and Equipment - including processes, tools, standards and training for BEV, New Battery Lab, H2.

To deliver Customer Intimacy

  • Reporting - Ensuring that Maintenance reporting is timely, accurate and transparent (incl. schedule requirements for planned work, issue diagnosis and C/M, cell status and compliance testing)

  • Meeting - Attending and/or facilitating daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual meetings as the PTT Dept. Maintenance representative and SME.

  • Leading - As the PTT Depts. Maintenance leader you will be authoritative, first POC, safety, quality and schedule driven. While bringing a sense of urgency to issue resolution you will also role model Safety Best Practices and Toyota Way behaviors.

  • Collaborating - Maintaining strong tactical and strategic relationships with:

    • Internal Toyota customers and suppliers with facilities and regulatory responsibilities (incl. MBO/Facilities, Environmental, Security, Business Planning Ops, Security, Regulatory Affairs).

    • External suppliers of regulatory information (incl. EPA, CARB, SAE - to understand future emission and maintenance regulations).

    • TMC (to drive maintenance process efficiency and understand global facility utilization).

  • Consulting - Maintaining an open-door policy that encourages maintenance questions and drives curiosity in the maintenance team as well as maintenance improvements.

What you will bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other related technical disciplines to include Trade school/certificates (co-op/internship will be considered).

  • Must have a minimum of 8+ years of experience or the equivalent experience in vehicle or Powertrain (PT) Lab Test Supervision.

  • Minimum of 8+ years of experience with 24/7/365 Facility Operations and driving improvement from operational KPI's.

  • Experience with record managing and resolving test cell issues and customer concerns in a timely manner.

  • Experience authoring/revising/reviewing standard work documents, work instructions.

  • Must have a strong level proficiency with MS Tools (Excel, Power Point, Word).

  • Willingness to work overtime as needed (average of 5 hours per week) and travel up to 5% as required.

  • Ability to work second shift (3:30 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.), weekends, and holidays on an as-needed basis.

Added bonus if you have

  • Experience coaching and training team members on the application of standard work documents, work instructions.

  • Facilities experience/knowledge (e.g. Fire Extinguishing Systems, Systems Integration, Test Cell Safety Systems).

  • Knowledge/experience of ISO 45001 Safety Standard and Toyota Safety Management System (SMS).

  • Automotive Testing experience (Chassis/Engine/Transmission Dyno).

  • Experience operating or maintaining gaseous and particulate matter (PM) emissions equipment.

  • Prior expertise with Federal/State emissions regulations (CFR).

  • Experience operating and maintaining analytical equipment or test cell equipment.

  • Proven experience with ability in vehicle/vehicle component testing/repair/diagnostics.

  • Familiarity with test cell automation software.

  • Prior experience of industry standard Operations Management, Quality Management processes.

  • Battery electric vehicle/ Fuel Cell electric vehicle experience.

  • Powered Industrial Equipment training and experience.

  • Experience operating or maintaining Horiba analytical equipment (MEXA-7000 series, MEXA-ONE, etc.) and AIP/MAHA Chassis Dynamometers.

  • Familiarity with Horiba cell automation software (VETS-NT, STARS-VETS, etc.).

  • Knowledge of Toyota tools for S/W and data acquisition (Panel 4, TS Writer, GTS+).

  • Completion of a JKK process creation or improvement.

  • Experience leading Quality Circle Activities and/or completion of TBP.

  • Strong understanding and ability to follow Toyota way (TPS, 5S, Go and See).

  • Proficient in oral and written communications.
