Site Lab Operations- Associate Director
What You Will Do
Lets do this. Lets change the world. In this vital role you will oversee the operations and management of laboratory services at Amgen. This position will play a key role in ensuring the effective and efficient management of site-based laboratory activities, maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, and driving continuous improvement in laboratory operations. The role will also involve working closely with R&D and site teams to optimize lab operations and promote innovation across the organization. This role will report to the Global Head of R&D Lab Operations and site based in Thousand Oaks, CA.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Management:

  • Lead and manage a team of laboratory professionals and support staff at the site level.
  • Oversee the site laboratory operations team to ensure effective execution of an integrated laboratory management strategy with the Global Head of R&D Lab Operations and scientific functional leaders
  • Provide direction and mentorship to laboratory personnel to ensure operational efficiency and high-quality results.
  • Ensure alignment with organizational goals, objectives, and compliance standards.
Laboratory Operations Oversight
  • Oversee day-to-day lab activities, ensuring they are performed accurately, safely, and efficiently.
  • Support site staff in delivering a comprehensive end-to-end laboratory management strategy.
  • Ensure that laboratory equipment is properly maintained and calibrated.
  • Develop and implement SOPs and best practices to optimize lab processes.
Process Improvement & Automation
  • Evaluate and implement process improvement, environmental sustainability, and automation initiatives to enhance speed and delivery of services.
  • Advance capabilities and automation within the lab to optimize workflows, reduce cycle times, and improve operational efficiency.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by identifying inefficiencies, recommending solutions, and implementing changes to enhance laboratory performance.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Act as the main point of contact for integrated services at the site and represent Lab Operations on cross-site, cross-functional project teams.
  • Ensure engagement and partnership with functional leadership on site (EH&S, GFO, and other non R&D functions) and any other key internal and external stakeholders to evolve processes and enhance organizational efficiency. As needed, will be part of the extended site leadership team
  • Work with site leaders and subject matter experts to optimize cross-functional collaboration and develop innovative solutions and share within the global lab ops network.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, proactively communicating, seeking advice, and facilitating critical business decisions.
Compliance & Quality Assurance
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements (e.g., GLP, GMP, ISO, or other relevant industry standards).
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and best practices.
  • Implement and monitor quality control systems to ensure accuracy and reliability of laboratory results.
  • Perform audits, inspections, and other compliance-related activities as needed.
Financial Management
  • Monitor and report on lab performance metrics, adjusting operations as necessary to meet organizational goals.
  • Find opportunities for cost savings and process improvements within lab operations.
Strategic Planning & Continuous Improvement
  • Translate strategy into action, diagnose problems, co-create solutions, and successfully conduct high-priority efforts to enable innovation and continuous improvement across R&D.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning and growth of lab operations, including expansion of services or infrastructure.
  • Engage with industry leaders to develop and share best practices.

Basic Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree and 3 years of pharmaceutical/life science experience OR
  • Masters degree and 5 years of pharmaceutical/life science experience OR
  • Bachelors degree and 7 years of pharmaceutical/life science experience OR
  • Associates degree and 12 years of pharmaceutical/life science experience OR
  • High school diploma / GED and 14 years of pharmaceutical/life science experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Life Sciences, Chemistry, or a related field (PhD is a plus).
  • At least 7 years of experience in laboratory operations, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory best practices, regulatory standards, and quality management systems.
  • Proven experience in implementing process improvements and driving automation in laboratory settings.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with budget management and financial oversight in a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with lab information management systems (LIMS) and laboratory automation tools is preferred.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
