Job description

Job Title: Director, Laboratory Operations

Location: DeLand, FL (Onsite, Monday – Friday)

Compensation: USD $140,000 – $170,000 / year base (commensurate with experience) + 20% Bonus Potential

Position Summary

The Director of Laboratory Operations is responsible for the day-to-day technical, scientific, and administrative operation of the clinical laboratory, assuming duties as delegated by the Medical Director. Reporting directly to the VP of Lab Operations, this role provides strategic leadership, direction, and overall administration of the Clinical Laboratories in strict accordance with CAP, Federal, and State regulations.

The ideal candidate is a people-first leader who balances day-to-day operational oversight with robust succession planning, building future bench strength, and driving a culture of high engagement and continuous development.

Key Responsibilities

1. Operational & Strategic Leadership

  • Oversee operational and strategic objectives for a high-volume clinical laboratory.
  • Manage laboratory lanes to budget through rigorous cost savings, capital resource allocation, and productivity monitoring.
  • Monitor and utilize data-driven metrics to evaluate and drive business decisions for capital equipment and team resources.
  • Standardize and ensure all policies and procedures across lab locations are current, meeting federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Facilitate seamless communication between business lanes, shifts, and across diverse departments.
  • Oversee the development, expansion, or transition of service lines, platforms, and long-term strategic projects across multiple sites.

2. People Leadership & Talent Development

  • Prioritize day-to-day operational oversight with a heavy focus on succession planning and creating future bench strength at the leadership level.
  • Set clear performance standards and drive accountability through influence, collaboration, and high-impact leadership.
  • Drive team engagement, morale, and a deep sense of belonging across all shifts and teams.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop leaders and emerging talent, upleveling overall team capability.

3. Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Oversee the training, competency, and performance of laboratory testing by clinical staff—ensuring accurate recording and resulting of tests to guarantee full regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) programs are rigorously established and maintained.
  • Foster exceptional internal and external customer relations, resolving complex technical or operational problems in a timely, decisive manner.

Position Requirements

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related sciences is required.
  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) or relevant sciences is preferred.
  • Medical Technologist Registry required (ASCP, AMT, AAB, or equivalent).
  • Florida Supervisor License in Microbiology or as a Generalist is required (Candidates currently outside of Florida must be eligible and willing to obtain this license upon relocation).

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 10 years of recent, progressive laboratory management experience in a high-volume Microbiology or highly complex testing environment.
  • Demonstrated success leading and transforming large teams in high-volume, multi-site lab environments.
  • Proven experience managing complex technical or platform transitions.
  • Expert-level knowledge of CAP, Federal, and State clinical laboratory regulations.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Preferred Industry experience

  • Proven experience successfully implementing new programs, products, or methodologies within a clinical laboratory setting.
