Job description

An affiliate of Colossal is seeking a Laboratory Operations Associate to support the day to day operations of the lab according to established procedures. The primary role of the Laboratory Operations Associate is to monitor performance of all tasks and materials required to ensure that maintenance of equipment and consumables inventory meets all lab operations requirements. In this hands-on position, the Lab Operations Associate will be a proactive, self-directed contributor, building their expertise in laboratory operations within a leading-edge biotechnology facility. This position reports directly to the Associate Director of Lab Operations.

This new position is based on-site out of our Dallas, TX Headquarters. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive and log in shipments, ensuring proper unpacking, documentation, box breakdown, and placement of items in designated storage locations.
  • Assist with delivery and pickup of lab compressed gases and cryogenic liquids. 
  • Assist with liquid/solid waste pickups and proper storage of chemical/biohazard waste. 
  • Perform glassware/washing/autoclave services and preparation of buffer/media stocks.
  • Assist with ordering general laboratory supplies, reagents and consumables.
  • Support laboratory and facility equipment management - assist with delivery, installation, calibrations, preventative maintenance, cleaning, and decontamination of laboratory equipment; ensure proper use, care, and training of equipment by employees; help develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures for equipment use and care.
  • Assist with all site-related safety programs in line with corporate EHS policies, including hazardous waste streams, chemical inventories and SDS databases.
  • Assist in the maintenance and servicing of laboratory equipment including daily tasks to ensure instruments are working properly, schedule preventative maintenance, troubleshoot routine issues.  
  • Act as a point of contact for lab-related service vendors and contractors including stockroom inventory, lab coat laundering, pipette management.
  • Support general lab activities along with the operations team to promote an efficient working environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in conjunction with the Laboratory Operations team.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with biological instrumentation.
  • Hands-on experience in biology or chemistry.
  • Familiarity with cellular, molecular, and microbiology techniques.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks and/or projects, inventory management and ordering. 
  • Customer service oriented; works well with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated skill in problem-solving and the ability to handle operations issues in a fast-paced environment with a service-focused attitude.
  • Detail oriented with specific attention to quality control and a commitment to excellence.
  • Personable and articulate, with strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Desire to be part of a team-focused environment. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace applications.
  • Occasional early morning, evening and/or weekend hours may be a requirement. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and be able to stand for multiple hours at a time. 
  • Ability to travel to other laboratory locations, as needed. 

Education and Experience:

  • Associate Degree with minimum of two years experience OR a Bachelor's Degree in science field with minimum one year experience in an academic and/or commercial laboratory environment.
  • Experience in equipment cleaning and maintenance, biological and chemical waste management. inventory management and ordering.
