What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Lab Operations, and why are they important?

To thrive in Lab Operations, you need a solid background in laboratory techniques, quality control, and safety protocols, typically supported by a degree in a scientific field. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), instrumentation calibration, and regulatory standards like GLP or ISO is essential. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help ensure smooth workflow and collaboration within the lab. These competencies are crucial for maintaining accurate results, regulatory compliance, and efficient lab functioning.

What is the difference between Lab Operations vs Laboratory Technician?

AspectLab OperationsLaboratory Technician
Required CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in a science or related fieldOften requires an associate degree or certification in laboratory technology
Work EnvironmentInvolves overseeing lab workflows, managing staff, and ensuring complianceHands-on testing, sample preparation, and data recording in laboratory settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in research labs, clinical labs, and industrial settings for management rolesCommon in clinical, medical, and industrial laboratories for technical tasks

Lab Operations professionals focus on managing laboratory workflows, staff, and compliance, often requiring a bachelor's degree. Laboratory Technicians perform hands-on testing and sample analysis, typically with an associate degree or certification. While both roles are essential in laboratory settings, Lab Operations roles are more managerial and oversight-oriented, whereas Laboratory Technicians are more technical and operational.

What are Lab Operations?

Lab Operations refers to the processes, systems, and people responsible for ensuring that a laboratory runs smoothly and efficiently. This includes managing equipment, supplies, safety protocols, scheduling, and regulatory compliance. Those working in lab operations may coordinate experiments, maintain instruments, oversee inventory, and support researchers or scientists. The goal is to create a safe and organized environment that enables scientific work to be carried out effectively and in compliance with industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced in lab operations roles, and how can they be effectively managed?

Professionals in lab operations often encounter challenges such as maintaining compliance with safety regulations, managing inventory and equipment calibration, and ensuring smooth workflow coordination among team members. Staying organized and implementing standardized protocols can help mitigate these issues. Additionally, strong communication skills and regular training support efficient collaboration between scientists, technicians, and support staff, which is crucial for minimizing errors and maintaining a productive lab environment.

Job description

Join the leader in entertainment innovation and help us design the future. At Dolby, science meets art, and high tech means more than computer code. As a member of the Dolby team, you'll see and hear the results of your work everywhere, from movie theaters to smartphones. We continue to revolutionize how people create, deliver, and enjoy entertainment worldwide. To do that, we need the absolute best talent. We're big enough to give you all the resources you need, and small enough so you can make a real difference and earn recognition for your work. We offer a collegial culture, challenging projects, and excellent compensation and benefits, not to mention a Flex Work approach that is truly flexible to support where, when, and how you do your best work.
The People and Places team designs spectacular experiences for people around the globe, curating the conditions for our talent to do their best work and drive business growth.
About the Role:
We're looking for a curious, hands-on intern to join our Lab Management crew in San Francisco. This role sits at the intersection of Technical Support, Lab Operations, and Project Coordination-aka, you'll be right in the middle of the action, helping keep our labs running smoothly while driving improvements behind the scenes. If you're the kind of person who cares about what's happening in the booth, behind the wall, or under the hood just as much as what's happening on screen or on stage, this is the role for you.
In this role, you'll partner with senior engineers, lab ops, and cross-functional teams to keep systems humming, solve real-world problems, and bring new ideas to life. Whether you're troubleshooting issues, supporting lab users, or helping roll out new installations and upgrades, you'll have a direct impact on how our labs operate today and in the future.
What You'll Do:
Projects & Technical Exposure
  • Jump into live lab projects-upgrade equipment, set up new spaces, and improve existing environments

  • Help rebuild how we track projects (milestones, timelines, action items) using AI tools

  • Get hands-on with troubleshooting across audio, video, control systems, and compute environments (with support from engineers)

  • Create and update clear, usable docs (project pages, CAD drawings, runbooks)

Lab Operations
  • Keep labs organized, stocked, and ready for action day-to-day

  • Join lab walks to flag and resolve real issues - cleanliness, safety (EHS), space usage, and setup gaps

  • Own and update task trackers-what's broken, what's next, what's blocked

  • Coordinate fixes with facilities, vendors, and internal teams to keep things moving fast

  • Manage inventory and equipment organization so nothing gets lost or delayed

  • Document "how we do things," spot inefficiencies and prototype smarter workflows using data, automation, and AI

What We're Looking For:
  • Detail-obsessed and organized - you notice what others miss and keep things on track

  • Know your way around AV signal flow (or excited to learn fast)

  • Use AI as a tool, not a buzzword - you've applied it to rethink your own workflows or simplify messy processes

  • Fixer mindset - if something's broken, confusing, or inefficient, you jump in and improve it

  • Comfortable getting your hands dirty - using cable termination tools, testers, and basic mechanical gear is part of the job

  • Curious about how spaces work - from listening rooms to theaters, you want to understand what's happening behind the scenes

  • Adaptable and game to switch gears - one minute you're troubleshooting hardware, the next you're updating docs or chasing down a vendor

Nice to have (not required):
  • Can read CAD drawings and wire diagrams without getting lost

  • Comfortable with Office 365, Copilot, drafting tools, or media production tools

  • Some exposure to engineering, IT, or AV environments (labs, studios, theaters, etc.)

  • Interested in operations, systems design, or project management

  • Experience organizing messy data or streamlining a process

What You'll Gain:
  • You won't be stuck on the sidelines - you'll get hands-on with real labs, real systems, and real problems from day one

  • You'll work on cutting-edge audio, video, and compute environments - the kind of spaces most people never get behind the scenes of

  • You'll see your work show up immediately - you're work enables the future of Dolby's innovation

  • Work behind the scenes of high-performance audio + video spaces most people never see

  • Work side-by-side with some of the best A/V engineers in the world (if we do say so ourselves)

  • Use AI to actually change how work happens, not just talk about it

Eligibility:
Working towards Bachelor's or Master's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM field. Candidates with a background in other STEM disciplines (e.g., Mathematics) are also encouraged to apply. Recent graduates (within 6 months of graduation) are eligible. Must be available to work full-time Monday - Friday for 6 months between September 2026- March 2027.
Start dates for the internship are as follows: (*note* this date is not flexible)
  • September 21, 2026
