Job description

CAD Designer - HVAC
Position Overview
As a CAD Designer - HVAC with a Modigent operating company, you will create detailed 2D and 3D drawings, models, and fabrication documents for commercial and industrial HVAC systems. You will support project teams by producing accurate ductwork, piping, equipment layouts, and spooling drawings that enable efficient fabrication and field installation. This role combines technical expertise with collaboration across engineering, project management, and fabrication teams to deliver high-quality designs that meet project goals, budgets, and schedules.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings and models for commercial and industrial HVAC systems, including ductwork, piping, hangers, equipment layouts, and spooling.
  • Coordinate closely with HVAC Operations, Project Managers, Engineers, and Fabrication teams to ensure designs meet project requirements.
  • Organize and manage workload to meet project deadlines while maintaining budgets and quality standards.
  • Maintain and update HVAC drawing standards, templates, and project databases.
  • Create accurate fabrication and installation drawings, ensuring compliance with SMACNA standards, project specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Suggest design improvements and value engineering opportunities based on initial concepts and practical fabrication/installation feedback.
  • Assist in material selection and specification for HVAC systems and components.
  • Perform quality reviews of drawings and models to ensure accuracy and constructability.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior designers and project teams as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities
None (individual contributor role); may provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentoring to junior CAD Designers.
Requirements/Qualifications
  • Experience: 2-5+ years of CAD design experience focused on HVAC systems, preferably in commercial and industrial construction. Strong background in duct and pipe spooling is highly preferred.
  • Education: Associate's degree or technical school accreditation in CAD, Drafting, Mechanical Design, or a related field required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and/or fabrication CAD software (e.g., CADmep, Fabrication CAMduct) required. Valid driver's license a plus.
  • Physical Demands: Primarily office-based with occasional job site visits; ability to sit for extended periods and use computer equipment for long durations.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Professional office environment with periodic field exposure. Must follow all safety protocols when visiting job sites. This is not a safety-sensitive position.
