Junior CAD Operator - Steel America

Purpose:
Steel America, a division of Colonna's Shipyard, is seeking a Junior CAD Operator to support division operations in Norfolk, VA.
The CAD Operator will transform conceptual designs into precise actionable blueprints. This position involves creating detailed drawings, 3D models, and technical specifications that guide the fabrication and machining processes. The draftsman will collaborates closely with project managers, production teams, and clients to ensure that designs meet rigorous industry standards, adhere to safety regulations, and align with project requirements.
Job Description:
  • Support the preparation of drawings or computer models that include multiple views, detail drawings, and assembly drawings
  • Support the project shop-drawings, cutting list, installation-detail drawings, effect revisions and changes to same over the project duration using AutoCAD
  • Supplies sketches, computer models, and verbal information supplied by Superintendents to determine the most appropriate views, detail drawings, and supplementary information needed to complete assignments
  • Directly support the nominated Project Superintendent
  • Supports preparation of submissions of specific shop drawings to Client/Project Manager as required
  • Develops and implements processes, procedures and standards for design department
  • Takes a support role on projects drafting execution
  • Familiarity and execution of developing cut files, sending them to the burning machine, cutting them with the burning machine, and final packaging to destination is required
  • Understand and perform material traceability
  • Understand and perform all maintenance requirements of our Messer Cutting system, how to change consumables, and how to use all programs required for cutting and beveling
  • Prepares structural shop fabrication drawings and erection drawings including, material lists and shipping forms
  • Perform shop layout and facility drawings as required to assist in planning
  • Communicates and coordinates with other disciplines including mechanical and electrical, internal project management, purchasing and manufacturing departments to provide accurate structural approval and detailed production drawings to ensure their requirements are incorporated in structural drawings
  • Provides assistance in the development and maintenance of standard structural practices for drafting and fabrication of structures
  • Attend coordination/review meetings and assist on design and details and approval of the same
  • Maintain Project records through creation and management of document transmittal and recording system
Qualifications:
  • Must have an Associate's in Drafting (or related degree).
  • Must be able to proactively and systematically gather and store information.
  • Must be proficient in identifying and collecting necessary data, with a strong capability to transform it accurately into usable output.
  • Must maintain regular attendance and work independently, sometimes under pressure, to meet deadlines.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have strong mathematical skill and ability.
  • Must be proficient in all Microsoft 365 products and Microsoft Project.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1-2 years experience drafting with AutoCad and SolidWorks preferred.
  • Experience operating FARO Laser Tracking system with ability to present data in graphical formats to facilitate clear interpretation of result highly preferred
Travel Requirements:
  • Occasional Travel; 25% or less.
Physical Requirements:
  • Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Climb, Reach, Push and Pull, Stoop, Crawl, Kneel, Balance, Lift and Carry various objects and equipment.
  • General shipyard/industrial environment. Work is has physical demands that require frequent movement up to 65% of the time.
  • Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there is minimal exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Hear, talk, and smell.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available, but also requires safe navigation and regular partnership with operations teams within shipyard/industrial environments.
  • A considerable amount of time is spent operating a personal computer.
  • Must be able to climb up and down stairs and spend time moving throughout the facility and onboard marine vessels.
