What are some common challenges recruiters face when sourcing candidates for hard-to-fill positions?

Recruiters often encounter difficulties finding qualified candidates for hard-to-fill roles due to skill shortages, niche requirements, or high competition in the market. These roles may require specialized experience or certifications that limit the candidate pool. To address this, recruiters typically expand their sourcing strategies by leveraging professional networks, social media, and employee referrals, as well as proactively reaching out to passive candidates. Creative problem-solving and strong communication skills are essential for overcoming these challenges and successfully filling critical vacancies.

What is the difference between Job Recruiting vs Human Resources?

AspectJob RecruitingHuman Resources

Both roles are essential in the hiring process but serve different functions within an organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Job Recruiter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Job Recruiter, you need strong interpersonal skills, an understanding of talent acquisition strategies, and knowledge of recruitment processes, often supported by a degree in human resources or a related field. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), sourcing tools like LinkedIn Recruiter, and HR software is typically required. Excellent communication, relationship-building, and organizational skills help recruiters excel in connecting with candidates and hiring managers. These skills are vital for identifying top talent efficiently and ensuring a smooth and effective hiring process.

Job description

About Story Homes

Story Homes is a wholesale real estate brokerage based in Irvine, CA, specializing in distressed properties. Since 2024 we've closed hundreds of deals across Southern California, and our team of 40+ agents now operates from Los Angeles to Orange County, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Northern California. We're scaling fast, and we need a recruiter who can keep up.

About the Role

We're looking for a driven, resourceful Recruiter to build our talent engine from the ground up. As our first dedicated recruiter, you'll own the end-to-end recruiting process for our sales organization, with a primary focus on identifying, engaging, and onboarding high-performing real estate agents (1099 independent contractors). This is a proactive, outreach-first role; you won't just manage inbound applications. You'll actively source, pipeline, and build lasting relationships with top agent talent across the market, and you'll own the recruiting budget and the channels behind it.

You'll also be the front door to our culture. Story Homes is fast, competitive, and team-first; a championship mentality with a familial undercurrent. Leadership is accessible and direct: our GMs are on the floor, and every member of the team is reachable, right up to the CEO. We're hoodies, not suits. We reward the people who outwork everyone else without being asked. Your job is to find candidates who will thrive in exactly that environment.

If you thrive in a fast-paced setting, love the hunt, and have a track record of placing independent contractors in commission-driven sales roles, we want to hear from you. This isn't a cog-in-the-machine role. You'll build the recruiting function and directly shape our growth trajectory.

Requirements

What You'll Do
  • Proactively source and engage real estate agent talent across the market
  • Hit quarterly hiring targets (10+ agents per quarter)
  • Conduct phone screens and build a clear read on each candidate - hard skills, soft skills, and areas to explore
  • Coordinate interviews and keep candidates engaged throughout the process
  • Manage requisitions and candidate tracking in our ATS with accuracy and timely updates
  • Own and manage the recruiting budget across advertising and sourcing channels
  • Provide data-driven candidate and pipeline reports
  • Reduce time-to-fill for agent roles to under 30 days
  • Report to the Operations Manager weekly on pipeline health, conversion rates, and sourcing channel performance, with performance check-ins from the CEO
What We're Looking For
  • 4+ years of recruiting or talent acquisition experience, with a track record of success and growth in past roles
  • Experience recruiting commission-only or 1099 independent contractors in real estate, insurance, or similar sales environments
  • Full-cycle recruiting experience, from sourcing through offer
  • A sharp eye for candidate evaluation - able to assess fit and build a clear hard/soft-skill breakdown
  • Experience owning a recruiting budget
  • Hands-on with ATS platforms (Workable preferred)
  • Familiarity with LinkedIn, Indeed Smart Sourcing, or similar sourcing tools
  • Strong outbound sourcing and relationship-building skills
  • Organized, proactive, and strong with follow-through
  • Able to manage multiple open roles in a fast-paced environment

Benefits

  • $90,000-110,000 base salary
  • Medical benefits paid by the company (Individual only based on Company plan selected)
  • Vision and dental offered
  • 401(k) available (no match)
  • PTO and paid holidays
