An inventory analyst ensures that a company maintains appropriate inventory levels to meet projected sales demands. These professionals use tools like statistical analysis and market research to monitor and determine the rate of sale for company products. As an inventory analyst, your duties may include anticipating backorders, placing product orders, and maintaining online store inventory. You may also conduct yearly inventory audits and work to develop more efficient operations strategies. Although the career qualifications for inventory analysts vary depending on the industry and work environment, employers typically prefer at least a bachelor’s degree in business or another relevant field and prior work experience in retail or inventory management. Additional qualifications include strong analytical, communication, and time-management skills.
| Aspect | Inventory Analyst | Supply Chain Coordinator |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a bachelor's degree in supply chain, logistics, or related field; certifications like APICS CPIM are common | Similar educational background; often holds certifications in supply chain or logistics |
| Work Environment | Works primarily in offices, analyzing inventory data, and optimizing stock levels | Works across departments, coordinating logistics, procurement, and distribution activities |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used in manufacturing, retail, and distribution centers to manage stock levels | Common in logistics companies, retail chains, and manufacturing firms for overall supply chain management |
While both roles require knowledge of supply chain principles and similar credentials, Inventory Analysts focus on analyzing and managing inventory data, whereas Supply Chain Coordinators oversee broader logistics and coordination activities across the supply chain.
