PURPOSE OF JOB:

The Internal Medicine Consultant serves as a trusted peer resource for veterinary clients, offering accurate and timely medical consultation grounded in professional expertise and genuine collegial support. The scope of consultation encompasses all areas of small animal internal medicine, with emphasis on diagnostic reasoning, test selection and interpretation, treatment planning, monitoring, and disease prevention in dogs and cats.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Deliver peer-to-peer medical consultation to veterinary clients with professionalism, warmth, and genuine empathy - providing expert guidance on laboratory result interpretation, test selection, and case management.

  • Develop and maintain superior knowledge of all offerings and services, including proprietary testing and in-house diagnostics.

  • Cultivate and strengthen collegial rapport with clients throughout the consultation process.

  • Contribute actively to team culture by supporting colleagues, contributing positively to team culture, sharing clinical knowledge, and participating in the development of internal learning materials and resources.

  • Support consultation services and collaborate across departments as needed.

  • Attend consultant meetings and continuing education seminars

  • While not a core responsibility, the opportunity to participate in special projects, or contribute to the creation or delivery of client support materials, may arise.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) degree or equivalent with active license in the state of province in which you reside

  • Residency trained and board-certification in Small Animal Internal Medicine (ACVIM or EVCIM)

  • Minimum 5 years clinical experience after completing board certification.

  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written a plus

  • Bilingualism (specifically fluency in French, both spoken and written) a plus

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • We are looking for individuals who lead every interaction with kindness and empathy, and who pair that with an unwavering commitment to medical excellence.

  • Outstanding verbal communication skills in both phone and in-person settings, encompassing active listening, thoughtful questioning, and the ability to translate complex medical concepts into clear, collegial guidance delivered with genuine kindness and empathy.

  • Excellent written communication skills across all professional formats and contexts.

  • Consistent, professional communication with colleagues across teams and departments, reflecting the same care and clarity brought to every client interaction.

  • An unwavering commitment to medical excellence, demonstrated through active engagement with emerging literature, consensus guidelines, and a thorough knowledge of our diagnostic offerings and how to apply them in consultation.

  • Ability to translate that knowledge into practical, client-centered guidance - considering each client's goals and potential limitations and applying a spectrum of care approach to ensure every recommendation is medically sound, realistic, and achievable.

  • A proactive, self-directed approach to learning and knowledge retention. Consultants are expected to engage with that material, retain it, and make full use of the tools at their disposal.

  • Genuine enthusiasm for learning and integrating new medical and clinical information as our offerings evolve, with the ability to quickly translate that knowledge into confident, accurate consultation guidance.

  • Intellectual curiosity and a genuine growth mindset - a desire to keep learning, ask good questions, and continuously refine both medical knowledge, professional practice and personal development.

  • Proactive problem-solver with the ability to recognize opportunities, develop practical recommendations, and see them through to completion.

  • Technological fluency across multiple IT platforms, with enthusiasm for learning and adapting as tools and systems evolve.

  • Highly organized with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Self-directed and productive in a remote work setting, requiring minimal supervision.
