Position Summary


The Accounting Director is a key member of the leadership team responsible for building and maintaining the financial infrastructure necessary to support the Company's continued growth. This position provides strategic and operational leadership over all accounting, financial reporting, inventory accounting, tax compliance, internal controls, and financial administration functions.

This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local requirements, supporting multi-state operations, and strengthening the systems, processes, and controls necessary to scale the organization effectively.

The successful candidate will combine strong technical accounting expertise with leadership ability, business acumen, and a continuous improvement mindset. This individual must be comfortable operating both strategically and hands-on while leading a team and driving accountability across the finance function.


Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Financial Leadership: Partner with executive leadership to support strategic planning, growth initiatives, budgeting, forecasting, and financial decision-making. Serve as a financial advisor to operational leaders on business initiatives, investments, pricing decisions, and organizational growth. Develop financial reporting and performance metrics that enhance visibility into business performance.
  • Financial Reporting: Direct and oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and financial reporting. Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure accurate and timely financial statements. Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and company accounting policies. Analyze financial results and communicate significant variances, trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Compliance & Tax: Coordinate and oversee federal, state, and local tax compliance activities. Manage sales tax compliance, nexus monitoring, registrations, exemption certificate administration, and multi-state reporting requirements. Ensure strict adherence to U.S. GAAP, local, state, and federal tax laws, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Audit Management: Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors, tax advisors, banks, insurance providers, and other financial partners.
  • Internal Controls: Establish, monitor, and enforce internal financial policies and controls to mitigate risk and safeguard assets.
  • Team Development: Hire, train, mentor, and manage the accounting staff, creating a culture focused on accuracy, service, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
  • System Optimization: Evaluate corporate accounting software and drive process automation to scale accounting operations efficiently. Lead initiatives to automate workflows and improve efficiency throughout the accounting function.

  • Director: Responsible for an essential business function for a specific company division; in charge of all departments and/or Managers that operate within that function.


As an Accounting Director, you will be expected to:

  • Execute, willingly and enthusiastically, the tasks, projects and priorities assigned by your Officer in charge
  • Coordinate and oversee the activities of your essential business function (EBF) for your division
  • Hire new Managers for your divisional EBF as needed
  • Oversee the training of new subordinates in their positions
  • Delegate and prioritize the work activities of your subordinates
  • Assess and document workplace conduct and job performance of your subordinates, including conducting annual performance evaluations
  • Process time off requests of your subordinates
  • Administer disciplinary action when necessary
  • Perform terminations of Managers as needed
  • Provide Officer in charge with department-specific analyses and insights, including budgetary estimates and personnel recommendations, to aid in strategic business decisions
  • Purchase resources for your department(s)
  • Attend periodic manager meetings and training sessions
  • Be readily available to your department, co-workers, vendors, partners, customers and/or supervisor during normal business hours

Requirements:

Qualifications

Required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration is required
  • 7-10+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience managing accounting personnel.
  • Experience overseeing financial reporting, close processes, internal controls, and compliance functions.
  • Experience working directly with executive leadership and supporting business decision-making.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with accounting software, ERP systems, and financial reporting tools.
  • Strong understanding of internal controls and business process design.
  • Strategic thinking and business acumen.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lead change and process improvements.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Experience managing inventory levels exceeding $2 million
  • Experience with sales tax audits
  • Experience building department KPIs and executive dashboards
  • Familiarity with Amazon, e-commerce, or wholesale distribution channels
  • Experience preparing information for lenders, bonding companies, or investors
  • Proven ability to lead accounting organizations through rapid growth and process transformation
  • Demonstrated ability with Microsoft Office software: Excel, Word, Powerpoint, and Outlook


Preferred:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
  • MBA, Master's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
  • Experience within distribution, wholesale, publishing, manufacturing, inventory-intensive, or multi-location businesses.
  • Experience with inventory accounting and costing methodologies.
  • Experience managing multi-state sales tax and nexus compliance.
