Job Purpose

The Security Associate is responsible for the safety and security of the people and property at an office building in Liberty NY.

Essential Functions

The job duties and responsibilities of the position of Security Associate include, but are not limited to:

  • Protection of the building and the people within by maintaining a physical presence to deter, detect and report problems, hazards and threats.
  • Greet all employees and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Verify and screen the identity, legitimacy and purpose of all visitors, contractors, and deliveries before admitting.
  • Make accurate log entries documenting the arrival and departure of all staff, visitors, and contractors.
  • Render general assistance to, and respond to inquiries from, staff, visitors, and contractors as appropriate and practicable.
  • Interact with staff, visitors, and contractors to become familiar with their routines and establish a positive rapport so that they are comfortable requesting assistance or reporting incidents or suspicious circumstances.
  • Monitor staff arrivals and departures to/from the building and parking lots to ensure safety.
  • Operate and monitor video surveillance and access control systems, alarm systems and related computers to maintain situational awareness of conditions and to ensure proper functionality.
  • Conduct regular walk-through patrols of the building checking to ensure secure conditions of doors, windows, and gates.
  • Make timely and accurate notifications to report malfunctions, or faulty equipment or utilities as appropriate. Make associated log entries.
  • Make log entries to record incidents, activities, and deliveries.
  • Facilitate access within the building for cleaning contractor staff.
  • Intervene as necessary in a diplomatic manner to direct and inform people of our policies.
  • Respond to, investigate, and resolve building alarms. Make associated entries and notifications.
  • Call 911 in case of emergencies related to criminal, fire or medical incidents and make immediate notification to the Director of Security.
  • Cooperate with all emergency services agencies: Police, Fire and EMS.
  • Assist evacuating people to safety during emergencies or hazardous conditions.
  • Check-in with and keep track of staff, visitors and contractors especially at closing times, off-hour operations and at sensitive locations within the building.
  • Answer telephone, radio and voice messages to relay information and respond to inquiries.
  • Make observations, log entries, and notifications of incidents including but not limited to injuries to persons, damage to property, presence of unauthorized or suspicious persons or unusual occurrences by specifically observing and recording the identifying information and description of all people and/or vehicles involved in incidents.
  • When specifically assigned by the Director of Security, provide support and security to special events and functions in the building.
  • Record, safeguard and arrange to return lost and found property.
  • Attend and participate in training, background checks and drug testing as assigned.
  • Be aware of all scheduled events, visitors, or deliveries during assigned shift.
  • Assist Director of Security with training of new staff as requested.
  • Observe strict confidentiality and discretion in all matters.
  • Maintain a clean and uncluttered assigned work area.
  • Perform tasks as assigned by Director of Security.


Competencies and Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for employment as a Security Associate are:

  • At least 18 years of age or older as required by applicable law.
  • High school diploma / GED or at least 5 years of verifiable work experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be willing to work nights, overnights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Basic computer skills/literacy of word processing, logging information and email using programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Google Docs.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interact with people in a cordial, direct and professional manner.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Submission to a comprehensive background check.


Preferred qualifications include but are not limited to the following:

  • Current or former law enforcement, IE: Police, Corrections etc.
  • New York State Security Guard License.
  • Relevant professional work experience, IE: customer service, security etc.
  • Completion of a criminal justice or related college level course of study.
  • CPR / AED Certified.

Security Associate I: Entry Level.

Security Associate II: NYS Security Guard License.

Security Associate III: Law Enforcement Experience.
