This role is responsible for the security and safety of Markel associates and to protect Markel property from theft, sabotage, fire and accidents. Responsible for investigating and writing reports on accidents, incidents, suspicious activities, safety and fire hazards and/or other security related issues. Security Associate will provide any needed assistance to associates, customers, and visitors within departmental guidelines and maintain a positive contact between internal and external customers. Proactively manage the work processes of the Security Desk to ensure compliance with internal & departmental policies for the Security & Safety environment at the campus. Must be able to apply safety and security knowledge for quick decisions in emergency situations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversees and provides any needed assistance to associates, customers, and visitors within departmental guidelines and maintains positive contact between internal and external customers.

  • Accountable for maintaining confidential information and ensuring all team members do the same.

  • Proactively manage the work processes of the Security Desk to ensure compliance with internal & departmental policies for the Security & Safety environment at the campus.

  • Responsible for investigating and writing reports on accidents, incidents, suspicious activities, safety and fire hazards, and/or other security-related issues.

  • For all emergencies must be able to apply safety and security knowledge for quick decisions in emergency situations and follow department procedures and immediately contact the Security Director and/or Manager to relay pertinent information. For medical emergencies, ascertain the exact nature of the problem and the immediacy of the need, calm the caller, and encourage the caller to remain on the line in case further assistance is required. For fire emergencies, determine whether people are at risk and ascertain the nature and extent of the fire. For police emergencies, assess the potential for violence and degree of risk to the public and police personnel, as well as the nature of the crime and whether it is still in progress.

  • Maintain files (both electronic and paper documents) and route incoming emails and documents according to department guidelines. Stay abreast of incoming work and understand the sequence of work to be produced to complete all work according to service standards and guidelines.

  • Recognizes deficiencies and recommends improvements or enhancements to existing processes for greater efficiencies within the department.

Job Requirements:

Time/Attendance Requirements

  • Full-time / 37.5 hrs weekly, 7:30 am - 5:30 pm, M-T-T-F

Education

  • High school diploma/equivalent

  • College degree preferred

  • Courses in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, and/or Emergency Management preferred

Certification

  • Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, Armed Security Officer

  • Current CPR/AED/Basic First Aid

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of previous Law Enforcement/Public Safety and/or Corporate Security

Skill Sets

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Strong organization and time management skills

  • Strong working knowledge of BRIVO ACS and EagleEye VMS is a must

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Word)

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Strong team player

  • Flexibility and attention to details

  • Ability to work in high-stress environments and manage emergency situations

  • Ability to lift 75 lbs.
