What is industrial sales?

Industrial sales jobs entail working to sell fixed-capital products that companies or individuals can use in manufacturing or distribution. Your duties may involve selling a product or equipment or to market materials or general supply products. You may also offer technical services to manufacturers. In this career, you may focus your sales efforts in a specific territory or region. The responsibilities of a salesperson may involve building a relationship with potential customers or maintaining contact with an existing customer base. A regional sales manager oversees sales operations for a region, and salespeople report to the manager.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an industrial sales professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Industrial Sales, you need strong knowledge of industrial products and markets, excellent sales acumen, and often a relevant bachelor’s degree in business or engineering. Familiarity with CRM software, sales analytics tools, and sometimes certifications like Certified Professional Sales Person (CPSP) are commonly required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, resilience, and effective negotiation abilities set top performers apart. These skills are crucial for building lasting client relationships, meeting sales targets, and navigating complex purchasing processes in industrial sectors.

What are some common challenges faced in an industrial sales role, and how can they be addressed?

Industrial sales professionals often encounter challenges such as lengthy sales cycles, complex technical requirements, and the need to build strong relationships with decision-makers. Success in this role requires a solid understanding of clients' operational needs and the ability to coordinate with engineering or product teams to tailor solutions. Effective communication, persistence, and a proactive approach to follow-ups are key to overcoming obstacles and closing deals. Regular training on product updates and industry trends also helps maintain a competitive edge.

Company Description

Superior Industrial Equipment was started in April of 1997 by former employees of Ingersoll-Dresser Pump. It is always challenging to start a business, however we have been fortunate to have quality products and excellent employees with solid technical backgrounds. We identified three areas that we felt were most critical to the long term success of our business. We wanted to make sure the equipment we sold was properly applied; we felt it was important to provide good service to our customers; and lastly we have a passion for servicing the equipment we sell.

In trying to live up to these expectations, we have been blessed with finding qualified and dedicated employees that care about the needs of our customers. For our first eleven years in business we worked in a 2500 square foot facility where we kept acquiring more space until we were up to 7500 square feet. In 2008 we moved into a 15,000 square foot facility. In 2012 we purchased an additional 8000 square foot facility in Des Moines and in 2015 we added another 16,000 square foot facility in Sycamore, IL. This has added a great deal to our capabilities. We have added inventory and can more efficiently store it, and we installed a ten ton crane as well as other shop equipment that improves our efficiency and makes for a safer work environment.
