Job description

The Sr. Technical Support Engineer provides advanced technical expertise in the diagnosis, troubleshooting, and performance review of diesel engines and related auxiliary systems to improve reliability, system availability, and reduce out-of-service downtime. The role serves as a technical escalation point for shipboard teams during planned and unplanned maintenance, supports condition-based maintenance strategies, defines vendor work scopes and quality criteria, and leads assigned technical initiatives in partnership with Engine Asset leadership and Technical Operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides advanced technical support to the Manager, Diesel Engine, for planned and unplanned maintenance activities. Serve as a technical escalation point for diesel engine performance issues, SFOC system support, performance dashboard monitoring, and claims documentation.

  • Partners with the Director, Engine and Auxiliary Asset, to develop and standardize SOPs that support consistent asset lifecycle management practices, with a focus on diagnosis, troubleshooting, reliability, system availability, and reduced out-of-service downtime.

  • Partners with the Manager, Diesel Engine, and the Director, Engine and Auxiliary Asset, to apply advanced technical knowledge of diesel engines and auxiliary systems in identifying condition-based maintenance opportunities that improve safety, reliability, efficiency, and cost effectiveness across the fleet.

  • Develops technical work instructions and supports the deployment of planned maintenance software tools, ensuring procedures are clear, accurate, and aligned with operational maintenance requirements.

  • Defines detailed technical specifications for third-party vendor work, including scope of work, expected deliverables, and quality control criteria to verify completion against operational and technical standards.

  • Leads assigned technical projects, including feasibility assessment, planning, contractor selection, execution monitoring, expenditure tracking, and reporting, ensuring completion in compliance with Safety, Quality, and Environmental policies.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Scope: The Sr. Technical Support Engineer supports the Diesel Engine and Auxiliary Asset function by providing advanced technical expertise for diesel engines and related auxiliary systems across the fleet. The role partners closely with the Manager, Diesel Engine, and the Director, Engine and Auxiliary Asset, to support planned and unplanned maintenance, technical troubleshooting, performance monitoring, vendor work scopes, claims documentation, and project execution. The role has both shore side and fleet impact, as it supports shipboard teams in improving equipment availability, reducing downtime, and maintaining consistent technical standards across vessels.

  • Problem solving: The role requires the ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex diesel engine and auxiliary system issues using technical knowledge, performance data, maintenance history, dashboard reporting, SFOC trends, vendor input, and shipboard feedback. The Sr. Technical Support Engineer is expected to analyse technical issues, identify root causes or contributing factors, anticipate maintenance risks, and recommend practical solutions that support safe, reliable, and cost effective operations. The role also supports condition-based maintenance opportunities by evaluating system performance and identifying areas where preventive action may reduce operational disruption or future equipment failure.

  • Impact: This role directly contributes to improved vessel reliability, equipment performance, and reduced out of service downtime across the fleet. Through technical support, SOP development, planned maintenance work instructions, vendor specifications, quality control criteria, and project support, the role helps establish consistent practices within the diesel engine and auxiliary asset discipline. The position impacts operational readiness, safety, environmental compliance, cost control, and overall asset lifecycle management by supporting the standards and processes used to maintain critical marine technical systems.

  • Leadership: While the role does not appear to have direct reports, it requires strong technical leadership and the ability to influence shipboard teams, vendors, technical operations partners, and internal stakeholders without formal authority. The Sr. Technical Support Engineer provides guidance on technical issues, supports project execution, defines vendor work requirements, monitors completion against quality standards, and coordinates with the Manager, Diesel Engine, and Director, Engine and Auxiliary Asset, to ensure alignment with operational priorities. The role may also manage assigned initiatives, including feasibility review, planning, contractor coordination, expenditure tracking, reporting, and compliance with Safety, Quality, and Environmental policies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a related technical discipline

  • Preferred - Marine engineering license, OEM diesel engine training, STCW certification, or other technical certification related to diesel engines, auxiliary systems, asset reliability, or condition based maintenance.

  • 5+ years experience supporting diesel engine maintenance, troubleshooting, or technical operations in a marine, cruise, offshore, shipyard, fleet, or comparable heavy equipment environment.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to conduct statistical data analysis and interpret technical performance data.

  • proficient with Microsoft Office software and data analysis tools.

  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines and related auxiliary systems, including operating principles, maintenance requirements, performance indicators, troubleshooting methods, and failure modes.

  • Ability to diagnose complex technical issues using all data available.

  • Demonstrated ability to support condition based maintenance opportunities from planning through execution.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills are required to work effectively with shipboard teams, shoreside technical stakeholders, vendors, managers, and directors while supporting vessel reliability, reduced downtime, safety, compliance, and cost effectiveness.

  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate work, review information carefully, and follow established processes.

Travel: 25-50% with shipboard travel likely
